A Sudanese man arrested over a knife attack in Belfast on Monday is understood to have been granted leave to remain in Northern Ireland, the police have said.

The man, initially believed by police to be Somali but later confirmed as Sudanese, was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after officers were called to Kinnaird Avenue at about 10.30pm on Monday.

Video of the attack appeared to show a man with a knife holding another man down on the ground, before bystanders intervened. One of them hit the attacker over the head with a hurling stick. The victim, who is in his forties, had "significant" eye injuries, Assistant Chief Constable Ryan Henderson said.

Asked about the suspect's immigration status, Henderson said: "My understanding is that the individual came into Northern Ireland from Dublin, moving up, and then was granted leave to remain."

Police are not seeking anyone else over the attack and at this stage is not deemed terror-related, Henderson said.

Henderson said he shared "the public's revulsion at the attack', which he said had "sent shockwaves through communities".

The suspect is believed to have travelled from Sudan to Paris, then to Dublin, on unknown dates before taking a bus to Belfast in February 2023 where he immediately claimed asylum. He was given leave to remain in the UK in September 2023, according to Jon Boutcher, chief constable of Northern Ireland. He said his status when crossing the Irish border was still to be determined but that "lawyers will debate the legal status of this individual for weeks, months and even years to come".

The police who can't identify any ideological motive immediately sprang to label those who don't want to be invaded by bloodthirsty savages as "toxic."

Boutcher accused "faceless" people online who know nothing of Northern Ireland of causing "toxic" discourse that was inciting violence. The first minister, Michelle O'Neill, echoed his thoughts and called on people to reject "sectarianism" and violence.

In London, the Conservatives have demanded "total transparency" on the immigration status of the suspect. Chris Philp, the shadow home secretary, said: "Last night's brutal attempted beheading in Belfast is appalling. The government must ensure full details about the suspect's nationality and immigration status are released. Total transparency is required.

"If it turns out this man is an illegal immigrant it would provide further evidence that the government's lack of border control is endangering the public."

Hilary Benn, the Northern Ireland secretary, would not comment on the suspect's immigration status. He appealed for calm, adding it was "innocent people who suffer" when political leaders failed to reduce tensions.

And don't worry about the people having their eyes slashed open by a foreign invader. The only thing that bothers them is "backlash" against the violent foreign invaders. The forelash is accepted and even praised as "cultural enrichment."

He also paid tribute to the bystanders who intervened to pull the assailant away, saying they represented "the very best of humanity".

Anti-immigration protesters have sought to capitalise on the incident by calling for a mass protest in Belfast on Tuesday evening. An online message of unknown origin has widely circulated on social media calling for men over 18 to arrive wearing dark clothing and to be "prepared to fight or be arrested".

A version of the post circulating on X called for "road closures and businesses to close in protest over the migrant invasion of Northern Ireland". Politicians in Northern Ireland warned that the incident may be hijacked by far-right activists.

The people of the UK are unheard, so they're entitled to riot, according to all the people, including the current government of the UK, who justified BLM riots.
