Gun Thread: T-Minus 17 Hours Edition!

Howdy, Y'all! Welcome to the wondrously fabulous Gun Thread! As always, I want to thank all of our regulars for being here week in and week out, and also offer a bigly Gun Thread welcome to any newcomers who may be joining us tonight. Howdy and thank you for stopping by! I hope you find our wacky conversation on the subject of guns 'n shooting both enjoyable and informative. You are always welcome to lurk in the shadows of shame, but I'd like to invite you to jump into the conversation, say howdy, and tell us what kind of shooting you like to do!

That's right, hombres and hombrettes, PDT once again takes the oath of office tomorrow at noon! Suck on that, liberals!! Feel free to discuss the rebirth of America and it's founding ideals in the comments, particularly as it relates to guns, ammo and our 2nd Amendment as we celebrate this final Gun Thread under the failed regime of The Retard.

FUNdamentals
OK, so what have you done to incorporate a focus on fundamentals into your range time? Is this something you do as an afterthought (bad), or do you arrive at the range with a specific plan in mind (good)? As you engage targets, are you specifically focused on some element of stance, grip, trigger mechanics and sight alignment, or rather are you simply pointing for the middle and hoping things work out? Let's assume you believe, as you should, that accurate shooting results from the application of proper fundamentals, then why on the planet of the Earth would you be focused on anything else? Or worse, nothing at all? I mean, you have to be thinking about something, right? Why not make it something useful and productive to the task at hand? I swear I am not making this up, but every time I pull the trigger, i am focused on one of these fundamentals.

I have to say I am also somewhat mystified by shooters who will send 50 or 100 rounds at a single paper target during a range session and expect to get any usable feedback as a result. Focus on your fundamentals while you are shooting and study your targets to see if it's working. Take notes. Write on the targets regarding what you were doing (right or wrong) and what you think may be causing you problems. Use inexpensive targets and use a lot of them. My favorite indoor target is a plain sheet of copier paper with a one inch sticky dot in the center. Some people use paper plates, and that's fine too. I usually change targets at each reload, and before I run another target downrange, spend a few moments analyzing the one just used.

Analysis is key and you have to study what you are doing, right or wrong, before trying to implement changes to fix things. Don't just come home toeing the dirt after a lousy range performance in front of the range babes, give yourself the tools to do something about it!
