Gun Thread: Mother's Day Edition!

Howdy, Y'all! Welcome to the wondrously fabulous Gun Thread! As always, I want to thank all of our regulars for being here week in and week out, and also offer a bigly Gun Thread welcome to any newcomers who may be joining us tonight. Howdy and thank you for stopping by! I hope you find our wacky conversation on the subject of guns 'n shooting both enjoyable and informative. You are always welcome to lurk in the shadows of shame, but I'd like to invite you to jump into the conversation, say howdy, and tell us what kind of shooting you like to do!

Holy Hallmark Shitballs! It's our festive annual Mother's Day Edition! That joyous time of the year where it only seems fitting to pay tribute to the shooting Mom's in our lives, so Happy Mother's Day to all of you Mom's out there! In fact, all the shooting 'ettes deserve a special day of their own, don't you think?! Ma Barker, pictured above, certainly fits the definition of a shooting mom... or did she? While there is some question regarding her level of participation in the "gang" bearing her name, some of her sons were unquestionably familiar with firearms. In any event, it's an interesting story, some of which is chronicled at the Oklahoma Historical Society's website, and Wikipedia even has some interesting things to say on the subject.

Something we haven't discussed much here is dealing with malfunctions. How can you practice fundamentals if your gun is all jammed up? Let's take a look at some common malfunctions now.

What other clearing drills do you practice? You are practicing clearing malfunctions, right? Oh for Pete's sake, please, please, please practice becoming proficient at clearing malfunctions by yourself. It does take practice, and you need to know how do do it unless you want to be seen as a helpless ninny!

The one time I had a police interaction with a gun in the car was when I was stopped on the side of the road with a flat tire. Although not required to do so in Virginia , I had my license and concealed carry permit in my hand as the State Trooper approached and I was quickly reviewing in my head the little statement I was going to give about having a weapon in the vehicle. As he came to my window I said hello and offered the two cards. The trooper said simply "I don't need to see those" and that was it. Truth be told, I was a little dejected. I wanted to finally give my little statement.

WeaselPhilosophy teaches us when having contact with the police, or really anyone for that matter, but especially the police; don't be an asshole.

I knew that he probably knew I was a permit holder if he looked up my tag as he pulled up, and I wanted to do what I could to put him at ease because I had precisely nothing to gain by making his job any harder than it needed to be. It turns out the trooper was very cool and we chatted about guns and shooting as the flat tire was sorted out.

Gun Lawyer Gal makes an excellent point in the video, and that is the side of the road is not the place to argue about your rights or anything else for that matter. Save it for court if necessary.

What do all y'all think? Do you have a plan? For those not required to inform police you're carrying, do you plan to do so anyway? If not, why not?

A: Welp, it's pretty darn easy!

First, check your calendars for June 8th, 2024, and cancel anything already planned. Good so far? Then simply send an email to WeaselBell Productions expressing your interest, then sit back and anxiously wait for a reply. Our pal and most delightful 'ette and MoMe Hostess Extraordinaire bluebell will review your application and relevant permanent record notations to decide if you're NoVAMoMe material. If you're one of the chosen, you'll get a reply with a link and secret password to the registration site containing all the pertinent details. Look these over and complete the simple registration form, following the PayPal link provided at the end of the form to make your payment. The $30 pp fee covers appetizers, dinner (BBQ Chicken, hamburdogs, sides, and dessert) plus an unlimited amount of fun! Since we must guarantee a headcount to the caterer, all registrations must be made online by May 26th. We are not accepting payment for registration at the door. You do not need a PayPal account to register and can pay with any major credit card.

Cigar of the Week

A note about sources. The brick & mortar/online divide exists with cigars, as with guns, and most consumer products, with respect to price. As with guns - since both are "persecuted industries", basically - I make a conscious effort to source at least some of my cigars from my local store(s). It's a small thing, but the brick & mortar segment for both guns and tobacco are precious, and worth supporting where you can. And if you're lucky enough to have a good cigar store/lounge available, they're often a good social event with many dangerous people of the sort who own scary gunz, or read smart military blogs like this one. -rhomboid
