Food Thread: Mothers' Day Edition
***
I have two mothers to feed today, and while one would happily eat steak every day for the rest of her life, the other broadens her horizons somewhat and likes the good old American hot dog.
And so do I, so it is not a chore. The real question is: What sort of toppings go best? The answer is chopped onion, a bit of sauerkraut, and some good brown mustard. I will brook no discussion about this...the deluded few who do not embrace The Dildo Way are simply wrong.
However, in the interest of peace and comity, I have graciously... generously... wonderfully... agreed to expand the toppings somewhat. Chili sauce and grated Cheddar were thrown into the suggestion box -- probably in the dead of night -- so I will consider it as a token. But it is a childish and ultimately disappointing way to treat one of the glories of American backyard cooking, and yes, that is a thinly veiled sneer. Sautéed onion and peppers is also on the list, but I think that goes better with more robust sausages...maybe a sweet Italian?
I really must stop settling, but I will also allow yellow mustard. Ketchup however is a bridge too far, and I will have security escort out anyone who asks.

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, I lived in a student co-op (commies as far as the eye could see), and we had a rule: "Do not put inane things in good food." And while I like sugary, tart candy as much as the next guy, in the context of Oreo cookies, they are in fact inane!
And pretty damned gross sounding.

"The lurker sometimes known as Marty" has another flavor of bear meat, but it is maple/blueberry sausage! I'll need a ruling from the Horde, since my rules consider both of those ingredients to be inane with meat.
Well, most of the time. Maple syrup glazes can work on pork, and fruit admittedly goes well with some meats.

He's at it again! Misanthropic Humanitarian is most probably trolling me with this link, so I figured I could share the wealth!

I hope all of you have a happy and flavorful Mothers' Day, and spoil all of the mothers around you. Remember, they have the most important job in the world, and they cannot be replaced, no matter what the lunatics may claim.

Good butter, and Flap Meat...whatever the hell that is...just send it, Broccolini that isn't $6/bunch, garlic...lots of garlic!, well-marbled hanger steaks and elk chops to:

Who are those poor deluded souls who shake their Manhattans? These are the same people who drink fine bourbon with coke, and probably shake red wine with ice too.
However, I will give dispensation to those who use maple syrup on Brussels Sprouts! I tried that and it worked nicely. I still prefer Agave, but still...
And yes, I used to demand fancy bourbon, but let's face it, $1,200 for a bottle of bourbon is just stupid, insulting, and a ghastly affront to most people's palates and wallets. I think the sweet spot is $40-$60 for excellent and interesting bottles, and bumping that to $100 gets you an incremental improvement in quality, but nothing mind-blowing. More than that and I think you are paying for hype and rarity, which may look good in your liquor cabinet, but doesn't translate to more quality in the bottle.
