According to Webster-Miriam Dictionary my feeding of wildlife constitutes a "hobby". My father was an avid bird feeder while I was a kid growing up. After the Fabulous Mrs. Mis. Hum and I were married and bought our first starter home I've been feeding birds.
It is a very easy hobby to get into without spending oodles of money. Bird feeders have evolved over the years from wooden units to plastic, glass, metal and composite feeders. I attempt to go as squirrel proof as humanly possible.
The nice thing about bird feeding is that anyone can do it. Unless you live in a skyscraper in downtown NYC. It doesn't take a lot of effort. If you have been doing it for a number of years you probably have your feeders, feeding sites and routine down.
If you are new to it or are thinking about doing it there are a number of great books out along with the YouTube Channel. There are a number of stores that have popped up over the years which cater to the avian enthusiast.
Since moving from the semi-frozen tundra to the frozen tundra not only have we attracted song birds using Niger seed and Black Oil Sunflower seed we have attracted these visitors as well:
Turkeys are messy and I really don't care to have them around. They eat just about anything and are not as tasty as that Butter Ball from the local store.

Yes deer love the Sunflower Seed. I've moved feeders away from this station during the winter because these guys will clean out any feeder they can reach.

Bears will eat Niger Seed out of a Finch Feeder. Who knew? If you are in bear country best to take your feeders down every night before dusk. This particular photo was taken at approximately 5:45AM in June.
This is a homemade platform feeder for squirrels and Bluejays. This bear seems to enjoy it to.

Squirrels are one of most common nuisances with feeders. However, they do provide entertainment as well.
As many of you know I dabble with paint and brushes. In future threads we will get into "Crafts". This looks like a joyful instructional video.

So this is my inaugural Hobby/Craft thread. And of course I'll be sharing my pastimes with you. However, the Morons and I also want to hear from you about your hobbies and/or crafts. You can reach me at petmorons at gmail dot com.

So underneath the feeders this winter was Sylvester the Bobcat.

That wraps up this weekend's Hobby Thread. I'll be covering for Mr. J.J. Sefton until he's back in the saddle again. So if you have any bodging material you wish to submit. Please do so at petmorons at the g mail thingy dot com.
