In 2019, he himself declared Athens a sanctuary city. He does not use the word "sanctuary city," but he welcomes all illegal aliens to Athens and affirms that his government will protect them from any meanies in the federal government (then controlled, nominally, by Trump).

Which is the definition of a sanctuary city, of course.

He then insists there is no connection between crime and the crime of illegal immigration.
