Netflix Has a New Biopic About Hannibal, and This Time, They've Got the Casting 100% Historically Accurate
Wait, Hannibal Wasn't Black? I Just Assumed He Was Black Because Mr. T Played Him on the A-Team.
Wait, Mr. T Didn't Play Him on the A-Team?
Netflix once again race-swaps a historical figure, this time casting Denzel Washington as Hannibal, who was Phoenician.
I guess they figure, well, Carthage was in Africa, and people are stupid, so they won't know the difference, right?
And that's a sound enough working theory. People are now in fact stupider than they've ever been in human history. How sad is that?
I mean, honestly, in ninth grade, yeah, I thought Hannibal was black. Because Carthage is in Africa, so he's black. That simple. If I'm being more honest, that early-formed image stuck in my head for a long time.
But it's not accurate.
And just as the evil cuckstress Jada Pinkett's stupid raceswapped Cleopatra fiction offended Egyptians, this newest film has Tunisians bothered.
For some, the famous African-American actor is too old and, above all, too dark to portray Hannibal.
As I David Strom pointed out, Denzel Washington is... 68. Hannibal was something like mid-late thirties during his famous trek.
[T]he script is also a cause for concern for Tunisians, who are determined to preserve the image they have of the man considered to be one of history's greatest military strategists -- who died between 183 and 181 BC.
The debate, which began on social media and in some media outlets, has now reached Parliament. On Thursday, November 30, at the Assembly of the Representatives of the People (ARP), while the budget for the Ministry of Cultural Affairs was being discussed in plenary session as part of the 2024 Finance Law, MP Yassine Mami questioned Minister Hayet Ketat Guermazi about the Netflix project. "We have no information on the content. There's a risk of falsifying history," he said.... For Mami, who is also president of the Committee on Tourism, Culture and Services, it is about "defending Tunisian identity" and listening to "the reactions of civil society."
What a racist Tunisian. So full of White Privilege!
I love seeing Spider-Man in the background.
