Derek Chauvin Stabbed in Prison; Lawyer Alleges That the "Assault Was Allowed to Happen"

A source familiar with the situation informed the Associated Press that Derek Chauvin, the ex-Minneapolis police officer currently serving jail time in connection with the death of George Floyd, was stabbed and seriously injured by another inmate on Friday at a federal prison in Arizona.

The assault occurred at the Federal Correctional Institution in Tucson, a medium-security prison facing challenges due security lapses and staff shortages. The person providing this information spoke anonymously to the AP, as they were not authorized to publicly disclose details of the incident.

The Bureau of Prisons verified that an incarcerated individual was assaulted at FCI Tucson around 12:30 p.m. local time on Friday. According to the agency's statement, responding staff contained the situation and administered "life-saving measures" before the unnamed inmate was transported to a hospital for further treatment and evaluation.

Chauvin recently characterized his trial process as a "sham" as he made his first comments to the media since Floyd's death as part of a new documentary called The Fall of Minneapolis.

Minnesota authorities didn't bother to call up Derek Chauvin's family and tell them that he was seriously wounded and might die. Chauvin's mother heard about it from the media.

The family of disgraced former police officer Derek Chauvin claimed they were kept in the dark about the details of his prison stabbing that required employees to perform "life-saving measures."

Chauvin's mother, Carolyn Pawlenty, found out her son was "seriously injured" in a stabbing through the media and was not contacted by any officials on his condition, according to Alpha News on Saturday afternoon.

"How the hell do these news agencies know and his own mother doesn't even know? And that [prison] has an emergency contact number [for me]," Pawlenty told the outlet.

Pawlenty explained she's "worried and scared" about her son's condition.

"I can't even think what to say. I haven't been to bed and made a path in my kitchen and living room floor by pacing," Pawlenty said.

"We have attempted to contact the Bureau of Prisons regarding the media reports regarding Mr. Chauvin and we have not heard back," Mohrman told the outlet.

Gregory M. Erickson, another of Chauvin's attorneys, called out the prison for its lack of transparency.

"It appears to be indicative of a poorly run facility and indicates how Derek's assault was allowed to happen," Erickson said in a statement on Saturday.

The federal agency shared that his attacker was also taken to the hospital, but they have yet to be identified.

Chauvin has since been listed in "stable" condition.

The stabbing in Arizona comes just one week after the US Supreme Court rejected Chauvin's appeal of his second-degree murder conviction.

His lawyers argued that he should be kept out of general population and protected from other inmates. Apparently this common-sense measure was denied, because the state wants him to be murdered.

While the state and state media conceal every detail about Derek Chauvin's attacker, the state and state media are eagerly reporting all the details about the suspect in the shooting of three Palestinian students.

The suspect, Jason J. Eaton was detained Sunday afternoon near the scene of the shooting. Police said in a statement that a search of his property "gave investigators and prosecutors probable cause to believe that Mr. Eaton perpterated the shooting."

Oh! So the media can identify the race of a suspect, and apparently does think the race of a suspect is newsworthy and important... in certain cases.
