Krysten Sinema, Thom Tillis Now Circulating a Comprehensive Immigration Reform Bill for "Dreamers"
Gotta ram this through before the new Congress comes to town.
Supposedly, the deal is:
*Some form of path to citizenship for 2 million dreamers.
* A large boost in resources to speed up the processing of asylum seekers, including new processing centers and more asylum officers and judges.
* More resources to expedite the removal of migrants who don't qualify for asylum.
* A continuation of the Title 42 covid-health-rule restriction on migrants applying for asylum, until the new processing centers are operational, with the aim of a one-year cutoff.
* More funding for border officers.
The idea behind this compromise is this: It gives Democrats protections for 2 million dreamers and beefed up defenses of the due process rights of some migrants. It gives Republicans faster removal of migrants who fail to qualify for asylum to prevent them from remaining in the country, a continued restriction on applications for the next year and more border security.
Why shouldn't Title 42 be permanent?
As far as "more funding to expedite asylum cases:" if Title 42 (remain in Mexico) were permanent, this wouldn't be as necessary. Also, this is more Democrat smoke and mirrors; so, you're going to get the process reduced from nine years to, what, seven? And note, during this period, they're allowed to stay in the US -- and have children, who are automatically citizens, aka "anchor babies."
What about the absurd rules that get people asylum if they just tell the right lies? What about requiring actual proof of these claims?
And again, what about just making Remain in Mexico the rule going forward, permanently?
But whatever, I'm totally sure we'll get the benefit of the bargain on this, like we always do, on all of these amnesty plans.
Basically Biden just wants to extend Title 42 for another year because he's afraid the overrun border will hurt him politically.
But he wants the Republicans to give him something in return for something he himself needs.
And the Republicans are just stupid enough to give him something in return for nothing.
