THE MORNING RANT – Do The “Read Banned Books” Activists Support Students Reading “Rush Revere” and “When Harry Became Sally”?

My wife and I visited a crafts fair at our suburban town’s community center recently, and I noticed that a volunteer had placed a sign on the table in the entryway that read “Read Banned Books.”

My initial reaction was annoyance, because I am fed up with obsessive left-wing activists poisoning every realm of public life with politics.

Of course, the sign was referring to the “censorship” in nearby McMinn County, Tennessee of the book “Maus.” You probably heard about the McMinn/Maus controversy when the national media (which applauds censorship and de-platforming of conservatives by Monster Tech) suddenly expressed horror that one specific book related to the Holocaust was not going to be taught in McMinn County schools.

Were students prevented from reading Maus? No. It was just not going to be part of the curriculum.

The school board simply felt there were other materials more appropriate for teaching 8th graders about the Holocaust than one which features nudity, mental hospitalization, vulgar language, and the suicide of the character’s mother, all of which occur in the US, decades after WWII.

Not mandating that students read that book is called “censorship” and “book banning” by the left.

Fine. Then let’s talk about some other banned books that we conservatives need to get in front of our school kids.

With leftist teachers and school boards across America obsessed with transgenderism and pushing it on school children, let’s fight to get “When Harry Became Sally” into school libraries. Here’s a book cover blurb:

This book exposes the contrast between the media’s sunny depiction of gender fluidity and the often sad reality of living with gender dysphoria. It gives a voice to people who tried to “transition” by changing their bodies, and found themselves no better off. Especially troubling are the stories told by adults who were encouraged to transition as children but later regretted subjecting themselves to those drastic procedures.

Or maybe "Irreversible Damage: The Transgender Craze Seducing Our Daughters."

Why, in the last decade, has the diagnosis "gender dysphoria," transformed from a vanishingly rare affliction, applying almost exclusively to boys and men, to an epidemic among teenage girls?

In fact, let’s push for these books to not only be available in school libraries, but let’s make it part of the curriculum, so that these books must be taught. NOT teaching these books to school kids is censorship, right?

And don’t forget, the elite media that invoked the specter of Nazi book burnings because one rural county in Tennessee doesn’t teach one specific book, is the same media that had no criticism of Amazon - which has a super-majority market share - for banning “When Harry Became Sally.” [The Daily Signal – 01/09/2022]

The online giant’s continued censorship of “When Harry Became Sally” is also “insulting to the intellects of people on the left,” Anderson said, because the implication is that Amazon has to “protect you from dangerous ideas [because] you are so fragile that if we sold Ryan Anderson’s book, what? He might persuade you?”

Circling back to school curriculum, one of the enduring gifts that Rush Limbaugh left us was his “Rush Revere” series of children’s history books. Because these books are both patriotic and an excellent way to teach American history, a few non-woke school districts have actually adopted Rush Revere into their curriculum.

Guess how liberals respond when a book from a patriotic American author they don’t approve of is taught to our children? Surprise! They want it “banned.”

I’m alarmed that my child’s class is reading a Rush Limbaugh series. Am I overreacting? [Slate – 9/26/2019]

Find out for yourself if these books contain any subtle messages about minorities and their place in American history.

Having the evidence to support your position will be important if you hope to eliminate these books from future classrooms.

The stock answer to every leftist (including journalists) hyperventilating about “banned books” should be that “Irreversible Damage” belongs on every high school library’s bookshelf, and “Rush Revere” should be taught in every elementary school.

Once the leftists who are so vehemently opposed to “censorship” help us get our books taught in schools, then we can talk about their books. But since the left will fight tooth and nail to keep conservative books out of schools, there is no “conservative principle” that demands we tolerate their propaganda infiltrating our schools.
