The Morning Rant: Widespread Revulsion About Beijing Olympics Reveals Preference Cascade Against China
I was going to rant today about all the pundit-class Globalists and Principled Free Traders™ who are suddenly - and publicly - condemning the fact that China is playing host to the 2022 Olympics. These are the same people who for many years advocated for unfair, one-way trade that enriched the Chinese government while eliminating American jobs. Actually, I will still rant a little bit about that.
But first I am going to celebrate that there is a preference cascade in American public opinion occurring right now against Xi’s evil Chinese government. On both the left and the right, pundits and politicians are rushing to jump on the bandwagon by publicly proclaiming their disgust that a brutal tyrant like Xi is playing host to the Olympics and using it as a propaganda tool.
From the pundit-class’ widespread defense of China when Trump first announced his tariffs in 2018, to the widespread revulsion of China that is being expressed now, this is a victory for our cause. We haven’t won the war by any means, but we’ve won a huge battle. Going forward the battle will be about how to disengage from China, and how fast, not whether to become even more economically dependent on China.
Lyndsey Fifield is the Social Media Manager at The Heritage Foundation, which for years has been an advocate for outsourcing American manufacturing and materials sourcing to China. Heritage’s argument has effectively been that eliminating American jobs is great, because it saves consumers money due to cheaper labor.
I am not going to snark at Ms. Fifield about the tweet below. Instead, I am going to welcome her as a member of our team, and ask her to apply the same passion she feels about China hosting the Olympics to the greater crisis of American economic dependence on the Chinese regime. Right now, without Chinese acquiescence, the US effectively cannot assemble any product that requires a microchip. That is the terrifying control that communist China currently has. That is also a much bigger outrage than the two-week skating competition they’re hosting.
To answer her question of “how – HOW – was China allowed to host the Olympics at all,” perhaps Ms. Fifield can ask her Heritage co-workers why they spilled so much ink advocating for the normalization of China in the international community, and for economically strengthening Xi’s regime.
Trump’s Latest Tariffs Are Putting the Economy On Edge (The Heritage Foundation - 8/28/2019)
Given the size of China’s market, even if American companies could be directed out of China, plenty of America’s economic partners would easily assume the abandoned American share.
It’s bad enough the administration continues to increase taxes on Americans, but to suggest the president can command U.S. businesses where they can and cannot invest is against the principles of a free market economy.
Protecting China from Trump was a crusade for Heritage. There is a lot more of this:
The Data Are Clear: Remove Tariffs on China (The Heritage Foundation – 4/05/2019)
New Tariffs On China Will Translate To More Taxes on Americans (The Heritage Foundation - 8/09/2019)
Prior to the recent preference cascade in opinion against China, Principled Free Traders™ did not even try to hide the fact that they hated working-class Americans more than they disliked foreign slavery. Globalists unapologetically hated US sovereignty more than they disliked Uyghur internment camps.
Trust me, they still feel that way. They would still do a celebratory grave dance if more American workers could be replaced by Uyghur slaves in China.
But public opinion has turned against them. China and its evil regime are now toxic.
While I’m not impressed by globalists suddenly finding virtue in denouncing China, their cowardly, self-serving repositioning is putting their old corporatist allies in a bad spot. Coke, Nike, the NBA, the media cartel, etc are in a very difficult position right now. They have made themselves economically dependent on China. They must now be made to realize that their China bet was a losing bet. They can either take their loss now while denouncing Xi’s slavery and human rights abuses, or they can take the loss later when it's forced upon them by the anti-China political wave that’s about to engulf them.
Our America-first argument has the upper hand right now in the trade wars. Principled Free Traders™ and Globalists are on their heels and desperately trying to avoid the ugly stench from their years of being communist China’s biggest cheerleaders. So, let’s consolidate our gains, and then continue the battle to accelerate economic detachment from China.
P.S. – We really do seem to be at a turning point. Corporate America may start regretting their Chinese investments sooner rather than later. NBC is facing a cataclysmic loss of audience for the 2022 Winter Olympics
