The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition
Mass immigration into New York City is nothing new. The Dutch, Germans, British all came in large numbers after independence. And the Irish Potato Famine of the late 1840s drove what seemed like to New Yorkers of the time most of Ireland to the city. And then of course the great immigrations beginning in the 1880s from Italy and Russia and Poland (and a few other places) radically changed the ethnic makeup of NYC, but kept its essence, which included the best public school system in America, a sometimes maniacal drive to succeed, and an astonishingly rapid subsumption into the quintessential "New Yorker."
But the seeds of NYC's destruction were sown in the 1960s with the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965, which shifted American immigration away from its traditional sources and toward parts of the world that simply had no history or tradition of liberty, self reliance, and other attributes that comprised American Exceptionalism.
Anyone-can-vote madness hits NYC, serving up yet another far-left victory
Routine definitions of the word “citizen” include such phrases as a “person who legally belongs to a country and has the rights and protection of that country” and a person “who owes allegiance to a government and is entitled to protection from it.”
The common point is the transaction — a citizen gives something and gets something, as does the government.
One of those rights that has universally distinguished citizens from noncitizens is the right to vote. Unfortunately, we can now add that distinction to history’s trash heap thanks to the far left’s war on the nation’s culture and legal systems.
The author is unnecessarily histrionic, because the damage to New York City has already been done by several generations of immigrants whose overriding goal in life is to suckle from the government teat.
So they get to vote now? So what? Their representatives are doing everything they can to create Venezuela-On-The Hudson, and have been remarkably successful.
Yes, it is a shocking and disgusting thing to subvert the essence of America by allowing non-citizen voting, but the reality is already here. New York City is a 3rd World city with a 1st World revenue stream, courtesy of the finance industry. But that revenue has peaked, and the massive increase in city expenditures that began with de Blasio will only accelerate under a regime that owes its political power to the antithesis of the classic NYC success story.
Here is my entirely obvious prediction: Crime will increase. Poverty will increase. Urban decay will increase. Tourism will decrease. Suburban New Yorkers will spend less money in the city. In 10 years the mayor (a non-citizen?) will go to Congress and ask for $125 billion in emergency funding to stave off imminent default and the total collapse of city services.
And he will get it.
