FUND RAISING, THEIRS AND OURS

One of my followers had signed me up for progressive caucus emails last year as a joke and I wanted to show you how they speak to their base:

And then she included a couple of screen shots of one of the e-mails she received.

I've given money to conservative organizations, some of which fund raise rather aggressively, and I've never seen anything like this.

The requests for money I've gotten were, in many case, quite annoying. They've begged and pleaded for money, made outlandish promises, even included little gifts, did a lot of guilt tripping and fear mongering ("if you don't send us piles of money, we're all going to die!"). Maybe fund-raising has changed over the past decade. Does everybody do it this way now? After reading that e-mail, I feel like I'm on the battered end of an abusive relationship. My meth-addicted boyfriend is shouting at me and threatening me with bodily harm and mayhem.

It's like I'm collapsed on the floor in a corner and the unhinged lunatic who wrote the e-mail is fried on meth, looming over me like an angry god, and shouting:

"WHAT'S THE %$*&@! MATTER WITH YOU?? I TOLD YOU WHAT TO DO, AND YOU *DIDN'T* DO IT!!! WE KEEP GOING OVER THIS OVER AND OVER AGAIN AND YOU F*%#!^+# NEVER DO WHAT I F$@*&# TELL YOU TO DO!! YOU MISERABLE *%$#?@! FAILURE!! NOW YOU'LL PAY!! ONCE AGAIN, I'M GOING TO HAVE TO HURT YOU!! WHY DO YOU MAKE ME HURT YOU?? IT'S YOUR OWN DAMN FAULT, YOU #@!*&%!!"

Whew.

Second, does threatening your donor base actually work? I guess it must, in some fashion, because they're doing it. Anyone else here receive a conservative fund-raising email "commanding" you to do this or that? Someone on the Twitter thread pasted an example of texts he received from an organization called "WinRed", and they're pretty cringey, and he said he was getting 3 in a day, and something like that is going to make me *not* want to donate.

Perhaps all of the shouting and bullying is a sneak preview of what life will be like in the Happy Fun Camps.
