Buffy KL (1).jpg

I've been wanting to send photos of my furry family for quite awhile. They have had quite a life.

The three who are enjoying my clean sheet are Kitten Little, behind him is Roberto, and the light-colored one is Milky.

Kitten Little had followed me home one day, then disappeared, and a couple of weeks later, when I was walking my dog Buffy, KL emerged from Rabbi Taizi's yard, bumped noses with Buffy and followed us home a second time. Roberto lost an eye to an infection when he was a kitten, but seems to get along fine and is very loving. Milky is the accident prone kitten who jumped up to the kitchen counter in my daughter's apartment one day and burned his paw on the ceramic burner. He had to live in the large dog carrier-turned-cat hospital for a few weeks.

Disaster struck in May 2019 when a forest fire destroyed many homes in our small community of Mevo Modiim, Israel. When the fire department allowed us to return, my house was a cement block shell with a two-foot pile of ashes inside, and things had been looted. Only a few homes survived with little damage.

My daughter found Kitten Little and Roberto living in the ashes. A neighbor told me that he saw Milky at the Let the Animals Live organization, and I was able to re-adopt him. At first we were living at Kibbutz Hafets Haim and couldn't bring the cats there. My neighbor built feeding boxes for the cat survivors -- closed with a small opening so dogs and other larger animals couldn't get to the food. He set up a watering system as well. One time, my daughter went to refill the feeder and discovered a hedgehog in the box! Hedgehogs apparently prefer cat food to scorpions and centipedes.

Eventually we were able to take the three cats with us to our temporary home in the town of Reut, and now we are back on the moshav in temporary housing and trying to figure out what kind of house we want to rebuild. Cat Noir -- the black one sleeping on top of the cabinet in the kitchen, joined us a few months ago. We think he belonged to our neighbor who had a private cat rescue service; apparently none of her other cats survived. When the fire swept up the hill from the wady, the police and firemen gave us only ten minutes to leave. Only our dog Buffy and the grandchildren got into the car. I really miss Tiger, who always waited faithfully for me to come home from work. Nate, an older cat whom I had rescued as a kitten, showed up but then disappeared.

As you can see, Buffy has to share his bed with Kitten Little.

It is really hard to lose pets in that situation, but I'm glad these four survived, even Cat Noir, who bites when he's nervous.

Feel free to edit this email or the photos as you like.

Thanks for the great thread. It's really fun to see the pets and read their stories. - No name provided

With PetMorons in Israel, this certainly is the almost world famous AoS Pet Thread. So good to hear from you. What an amazing story and you are so fortunate to save some of your pets and grandchildren. Thanks so much for sharing photos of your cute critters.

This gentle giant is Sam. His handsome exterior is a disguise for his lovable, goofball personality. His favorite position has 4 legs in the air, an invitation to rub his gorgeous spots!
Thanks for always entertaining us, pet morons,
Lucy and Doug

What a handsome lad without any mischief in those eyes. I bet he's a fun guy to hang around with. We are happy you submitted his photo and background.

molly (1).jpg

Molly is our newest addition to Shep's Place. She's a 14 year old long hair chihuahua. She seemed healthy at first but we discovered she has worms and started coughing a few days after we got her so she is being medicated and is isolated from the other pups. We have no history on her so not sure what her background is or why she ended up at the animal shelter. She's absolutely adorable and loves to be held and loved on which none of us mind a bit. When she has her ears up she looks just like Gizmo. - Jewells

Keep up the good work Jewells. And good luck with Molly's recovery.

Meet Luna, our (nearly) 6 year old PomChi (Pomeranian/Chihuahua).

While it may look like she's about to dig into a bowl of kitten noodle soup, she was actually guarding them from her sisters (not pictured) when this photo was taken.

The Wifey found the pair of feral, 1-2 week old kittens near her office during a rain storm earlier this week, and brought them home until we could find a permanent home for them (I'm heavily allergic to cats). It was then that Luna's maternal instincts kicked in and she appointed herself their protector for the evening. Regards, Stu

If looks could kill, we would all be in trouble Stu. Thanks for sharing Luna's story. Quite the pooch.

This is our last picture of Shadow, before he made his final trip to the vet.
He remained a happy feisty pooch, even though cancer had taken hold and was tearing him apart.

I'll never forget walking though the rescue, and him up on the edge of the kennel, pawing at me, letting me know he was the one for us. Initially, I wasn't interested, but, finally came back and, decided he needed to come home with us. He was probably about age 8 when we got him. He rewarded us for taking his advice with 6 years of loyalty, and letting strangers know this was his house and we were his people, and, by golly, best be on your best behavior.

With him around, I never worried about my wife being home alone, because I knew he would take care of her, should anyone try anything.

This was the toughest call I've ever had to make with one of our pooches, because it felt like such a betrayal. But, I also realized if I avoided doing what needed to be done, I'd be betraying him and letting him suffer, because I didn't have the nerve to do what needed to be done.

Of all our dogs, he wasn't just our dog, we were also his people. Funny thing, he trusted us completely, though he came from an abusive household that didn't look after him, at all. How someone wouldn't recognize what they had is beyond me.

His best friend, Shue, who preceded him over the rainbow bridge by 5 years. It was hard to take, losing her, because, truly, with these two, it was love at first sight. We had a year of these two roughhousing, which was quite the sight, two large dogs, growling and shoving each other around. It was never serious, they just adored each other.

Hard to believe they are both gone. Both were featured on the pet thread, years ago.
Regards,

Blake - semi lurker in marginal standing

Condolences on your loss Blake. I bet it is awfully quiet there with out your buddy. We are glad you could give him 6 years of solid love and companionship.

Here's Stella the Berner with four front paws. Not really, she's laying on a plush toy with the same coloring. Thankfully she stayed still while I got the shot, which almost never happens. - JuJuBee

Quite the shot there JuJuBee. Amazing how animals will allow us to take a photo every once in awhile that demonstrates their cuteness. Thanks for sharing.
