The Morning Report - 5/31/21
Good morning kids. The meaning and purpose of this day, a time for solemn reflection and remembrance has become lost and muddled into merely the marking of the unofficial start of summer, and all the good and fun things that come with it. In the 76 years since the end of the Second World War, we went from a period of hardship and privation to the longest era of relative peace and prosperity that we had ever known. I suppose it is the human condition that makes us take things for granted. As the years have passed and the collective memory of those who made those sacrifices fades as they pass into history, we lose the connection to those who made it possible; the men and women who gave their lives in service so that we may enjoy the blessings of liberty.
The events of the past few years have made this Memorial Day, already one that gets more emotional as I've gotten older, even that much harder to bear for obvious reasons. But we have to go on. We have to remember them. For our own sake as well as theirs.
