Reports: McCarthy Will Not Whip Conference to Save Liz Cheney; She'll Probably Be Voted Out of Her Leadership Position -- and Soon
Kevin McCarthy has been distancing himself from Liz Cheney for months, and disinviting her to speak at gatherings.
Now he's openly discussing the fact that many within the caucus do not think she can speak for it.
A comment suggested in the last thread that maybe Liz Cheney leaked the Luntz stuff to Tucker Carlson.
I don't know if he meant that seriously. There's no objection on the grounds that Liz Cheney wouldn't leak to Tucker Carlson -- rightwingers routinely leak to leftwing outlets to hide their hand in the leak. So it would be SOP for Cheney to leak to someone politically opposed to her.
I would tend to doubt it, not because I have any inside knowledge, but just because life never works out that neatly.
Still, it's an interesting suggestion. I wouldn't put it past a Cheney to do it.
Here's Kevin McCarthy telling Fox that some within the congressional GOP caucus don't believe that Cheney is capable of speaking for the party.
So that's what McCarthy said on live TV.
But what he said when he thought he was off the air -- but caught on a hot mic -- is even worse for Cheney.
ouse Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) said Tuesday he's "lost confidence" in Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) during a moment of candor caught on a hot mic, a tape reviewed by Axios shows.
What he's saying: "I think she's got real problems," McCarthy told Steve Doocy off-air ahead of a live "Fox and Friends" interview. "I've had it with ... I've had it with her. You know, I've lost confidence. ... Well, someone just has to bring a motion, but I assume that will probably take place."
Even worse, The Hill reports that "top allies" of Frank Luntz's roommate say that McCarthy will not whip votes in her favor as he did in the last ouster attempt, and that Cheney's ouster is a foregone conclusion.
Top allies of House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) are vowing to oust Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.), one of the harshest critics of former President Trump in either party, from her leadership post by the end of the month.
They argue that the No. 3 Republican has repeatedly contradicted McCarthy and his team, undermining the party;s message and its efforts to take back the House majority in next year's midterm elections.
"There is no way that Liz will be conference chair by month's end," one key McCarthy ally told The Hill on Monday. "When there is a vote, it won't be a long conference; it will be fast. Everyone knows the outcome."
The developments suggest it is not just members of the conservative House Freedom Caucus who are pushing to get rid of Cheney; senior lawmakers in the 154-member Republican Study Committee, the largest GOP caucus on Capitol Hill, have been openly critical of Cheney and are now trying to orchestrate her removal.
"This is a broad range of lawmakers who have had it with her," said a second McCarthy ally. "She's a liability, and McCarthy’s as fed up as the rest of us that she is focused on the past rather than winning back the House."
Impotent NeverTrumpers, who have long ago defected to the Democrat Party (if you can even call such a minor adjustment in affiliation a "defection") are threatening again, as they do every month, that they'll defect to the Democrats unless the GOP keeps NeverTrumpers in positions of power:
Fuck you, queeny bitch. Who's paying your bills, David French? Are you still pretending you're not mostly funded by the left?
