Quarantine Cafe: Flashback 1979 Edition

1979: Where were you?

The story that most probably remember the most from 1979 is the taking of American hostages by Iran's Muslim jihadists, let by the Ayatollah Khomeini.

Who is now our Partner In Peace (TM), according to Obama and NeverTrump's President Joe Biden.

Some movie trailers from 1979:

Meteor, with Sean Connery.

Apocalypse Now.

Breaking Away. The only part I remember from this movie is that the main character hero-worships these Italian (?) cyclists, and they wind up throwing him from his bike by sticking a rod through his front spokes while he's riding.

Meatballs. Directed by Ivan Reitman.

Being There. A movie referenced six billion times by middlebrow political writers at Newsweek and Time through the 80s and 90s and even the 00s. I think they finally shut the fuck up about it ten years ago.

Never saw it myself. I saw about a minute when he's talking about gardening and everyone's like, "Oh, how insightful! He's talking about geopolitics but using gardening as a metaphor!"

So like it's a movie where everyone's half-a-retard. No wonder the middle-wits love this movie so much. It's what they wish the world was like.

Star Trek: the Motion Picture.

Moonraker.

The In-Laws.

Dracula, the Frank Langella one. Supposedly "the sexy one." Never saw it.

Salem's Lot played over two nights on TV, on CBS, I think.

Below: the window scene.

Still creepy!!!

Vampires were big in 1979: That's when they released Klaus Kinski's Dracula. Or is it Nosferatu?

And also: Love at First Bite.

TV commercials from 1979, including OJ Simpson in a role in which he's running but does not have someone else's blood dripping down his arm.

Here are some of the biggest hits of 1979.

"The Wall" was released then.

Probably the biggest single of 1979:

Another memorable song from 1979:

Here's Gary Numan doing Cars, first released in 1979. But he's doing it here with Nine Inch Nails in 2008. Really energetic performance.

Good to see he was still in rock-n-roll shape twelve years ago.
