The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition
Vote.
Do your options stink? Absolutely! I am second to none in my disdain for the machine Republicans on the ballot in Georgia. They are craven opportunists without a shred of integrity or a coherent political philosophy.
Vote anyway.
Yes, the possibility that the senate, led by the swamp creature formerly known as Mitch McConnell will act in ways antithetical to the best interests of the conservative movement approaches certainty. But not all of the time. Slowing the slide into full-blown progressivism is a laudable goal, and voting for the two Republican swamp rats will slow the slide. How much? Probably not much at all, but there is no sane argument that a Democrat Senate is in our best interests.
Will a Republican majority in the Senate embolden the inside-the-beltway scum? Of course. They will smugly claim victory and use it as support for their failed policy of running away at every opportunity. But the alternative is worse. Imagine a Senate led by the execrable Chuck Schumer, approving every obscene spending scheme and regulatory overreach and immigration law written by La Raza and speech codes that Orwell would have laughed at as too ridiculous even for his fiction. And the 2nd Amendment? Hah!
Because that's what we will get.
So hold your nose, puke into the bushes outside the polling place, and support the slightly less awful Republicans. We may already have reached a tipping point, in which case it really doesn't matter what happens. But there is also the possibility that we can claw this country back from the abyss, and holding on to the Senate is part of the process.
In fact, I see no way out of our current predicament short of a Republican party (or a new party) completely controlled by Donald Trump and his supporters, who seem to be a majority of the country, with the conspicuous exception of our Republican politicians.
Ay, there's the rub! If we allow the GOPe to succeed, we injure a Trump-centric resurgence. But if they fail, then it is probable that the country is lost, at least for the short and medium term.
To vote, or not to vote, that is the question:
Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer
The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune,
Or to take Arms against a Sea of troubles,
And by opposing end them.
