Problem Solutions

Beginner Problem - White To Play

20201003 - Problem 1.jpg
6kr/1q2r1p1/1p2N1Q1/5p2/1P1p4/6R1/7P/2R3K1 w - - 0 1

1.Rc8+ Qxc8
(1... Re8 2. Rxe8#)
2.Qxg7+ Rxg7
3.Rxg7# 1-0

Intermediate Problem - White To Play

20201003 - Problem 2.jpg
8/1R4pk/6pp/1P2P2r/5P1q/4n3/6QP/2R3K1 w - - 0 1

1.Rxg7+ Kxg7
2.Qb7+ Kf8 (2...Qe7 3.Qxe7+ Kg8 4.Rc8#)
3.Rc8+ Qd8
4.Rxd8# 1-0

If Black chooses to flee instead of take the rook on move 1, e.g. 1...Kh8, then 2.Qa8+ (2.Rc8+ Qd8 3.Rxd8+ Kxg7 4.Qb7#) 2...Kxg7 3.Rc7+ Qe7 4.Rxe7#

Either way, it's mate in 4.

Advanced Problem - Black To Play

20201003 - Problem 3.jpg
2qrr1n1/3b1kp1/2pBpn1p/1p2PP2/p2P4/1BP5/P3Q1PP/4RRK1 w - - 0 1

1.Qh5+! Nxh5 (1...g6?? 2.Qxg6#)
2.fxe6+ Kg6
3.Bc2+ Kg5
4.Rf5+ Kg6

Alternatives lose more quickly:

1) 4...Kh4 5.Re4+ Nf4 6.Rexf4#

2) 4...Kg4 5.h3+ Kg3 (5...Kh4 6.Re4+ Kg3 7.Rf3#) 6.Rf3+ Kh4 7.Re4+ Kg5 8.Rg4#

5.Rf6+ Kg5
6.Rg6+ Kh4
7.Re4+ Nf4
8.g3+ Kh3
9.Rxf4 Bxe6

Hope to see you all next week!

Note: that cryptic line of letters and numbers you see underneath each board diagram is a representation of the position in what is known as "Forsyth-Edwards Notation", or F.E.N. It's actually readable by humans. Most computer applications nowadays can read FEN, so those of you who may want to study the position, you can copy the line of FEN and paste into your chess app and it should automatically recreate the position on its display board. Or, Windows users can just "triple click" on it and the entire line will be highlighted so you can copy and paste it into your chess app.

So that about wraps it up for this week. Chess thread tips, suggestions, bribes, rumors, threats, and insults may be sent to my yahoo address: OregonMuse little-a-in-a-circle yahoo dott com.
