David Azerrad: Conservatism, Inc. Has Failed And Is Incapable of Self-Reform
Great piece by David Azerrad.
His review of Conservatism, Inc. -- informed by having recently worked inside of it -- is brutal.
What is conservatism in America today? It's hundreds of millions of dollars a year spent fiddling while Rome burns. It's ideas with little to no consequence. It's getting trampled all over by History, but while yelling Stop!
Conservatism is the seven cheers for capitalism and the deafening silence on demographic change, feminism, and corporate malfeasance. It's the same tired cast of speakers blathering about limited government almost a century after the New Deal. It's the platitudinous Reagan quotes and the worn-out Buckley anecdotes. It's the mindless optimism and the childish exhortations--if something can’t go on forever, it won't!
..
If this is conservatism, then we may be inclined to say, let the conservatives keep it. Perhaps the time has come for patriotic Americans tired of the Left desecrating all they hold dear to go beyond conservatism?
Conservatism may indeed be unsalvageable at this point. The old guard is too heavily invested in--nay, it benefits too much from the status quo to own up to its failures, correct its leftward drift, and reground itself in the realities of the 21st century. Its business model works, as evidenced by the hundreds of millions of dollars that flow into its coffers each year.
Read the whole thing. His main point is that Conservatism, Inc. still believes its mission is to defend society from a leftwing take-over.
Conservatism, Inc. cannot see -- or is paid not to see -- that the leftwing take-over already happened, and they won on every single front, often without even having to fire a shot.
Thus, the real mission for any true conservative is a counter-revolutionary offensive against well-defended ground, not defending territory that was lost years ago.
Again, they just can't see this or admit this. They still think it's 2003 and that we're doing a pretty great job of keeping the Maoists at bay.
This is why they're forever nattering on about civility and tone and all sorts of secondary or tertiary issues -- they still think that it's 2003 and the war will be won through Roberts Rules of Order and the tricks and tropes they learned in high school forensics.
And they babble about such inanities because the people paying them to babble -- the leftwing, #Woke corporate donor class -- is happy about the leftwing's takeover of all important institutions and certainly doesn't want to see the disruptions that a determined counter-offensive by actual conservatives would entail.
As I say, read the whole thing.
