The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition
If one can rant about one of our greatest thinkers, here it is. I have been reading Thomas Sowell for a long time, and his careful, rational, logical approach to issues has been of tremendous benefit when faced with the never-ending barrage of obfuscation, manipulation and out-and-out lies that we get from our media.
What makes him even more interesting is that his writing style is comfortable and accessible, and even better, he used to be a Marxist so he knows their arguments better than they do.
Here's a trailer for a new documentary about him.
Thomas Sowell: Common Sense in a Senseless World
Start with "Economic Facts And Fallacies," which is a brutal destruction of the shibboleths of the Left.
Among his chapters are:
Urban Facts and Fallacies
Academic Facts and Fallacies
Racial Facts and Fallacies
Third World Facts and Fallacies
Pretty juicy stuff. All of his books are good, and he is quite prolific, so you have a lot of reading ahead of you.
Or just watch his interviews, many of which are on YouTube.
The pleasure of having some of our culture's lazy axioms carefully dismantled is a rare thing, and he does it better than most. But he is more valuable than that. He is a fine and perceptive observer of the human condition, and he argues persuasively for the economic and other freedoms that we require, and he calls out those who would take them from us.
