The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition
The truth! What a novel concept. Facts and empirical analysis have gone by the wayside as we careen into territory that seems even more dystopian than Orwell's worst nightmares.
Conservatives Must Have the Courage to Tell the Truth About Carbon Dioxide
All across America, virtually all of our educational, political, religious, commercial and media establishment have bought hook line and sinker into the climate scare. When conservatives dare debate the issue at all, they do so entirely on their enemies’ terms: ‘carbon emissions,’ from the burning of hydrocarbon fuels—coal, oil and natural gas—are assumed to be causing dangerous climate change. The question is never whether we should bother reducing so-called ‘carbon pollution’ at all. It is merely a question of how—a tax on emissions, ‘cap and trade,’ regulations or a mass conversion to ‘green energy—and who should go first—developed or developing countries.
Ceding the rhetorical high ground is a huge mistake, and one that mainstream Republicans are taught to do from an early age. What is sad is that the conservative movement (such as it is) has largely accepted the wild suppositions of the climate alarmists, and simply argue from the viewpoint of market-driven solutions and efficiency.
How about a vociferous attack on the foundations of these lunatics' arguments?
More CO2 means free, rich fertilizer and thus increased yields of food crops for the poorest people in the developing countries. It is also natural fertilizer for forests and plains, and wilderness areas increasing food to sustain wildlife. [...] Thanks to the emissions of fossil fuels from tractors, trucks, and ships, automobiles and factories, hunger in the world has been declining.
That's much better than accepting the premise of global warming and simply trying to mitigate the damage caused by the progressive solution, which is planet-killing in a different way.
But we can extrapolate a vigorous offense to may other things. Socialist-Lite is a bad plan for America, and it needs to be rolled back on all fronts. The arguments are clear, but when we grant the point that a welfare state is okay, or even inevitable, but we just need to make it more efficient, we lose.
It's like the man who asks a beautiful woman if she would sleep with him for $1,000,000, and she pauses for a second then agrees. But when He says, "How about $100?" She slaps him. She's still a hooker; they are just arguing price.
Let's stop arguing price and start arguing from the philosophical perspective that socialism is morally wrong and economically untenable.
We have the facts on our side. Every segment of society benefits from principled conservative policies, and there are innumerable examples.
Here's a start: Overwhelming government power, as evidenced by out-of-control police departments that revel in violating the civil rights of all Americans, is a natural byproduct of the socialist state's huge and all-powerful government. It is perfectly conservative to roll back the power of the state, and blunt the point of its spear!
