Of Course: Democrats Calling for a... Media Stimulus Package

So now we'll be forced to pay for a media we have decided as citizens to refuse to support?

Democrat/corporate constituent service at its sleaziest.

Angus King of Maine wrote a letter demanding taxpayers pay money to the China-dominated media, and 19 Democrats cosgined.

Shouldn't they be seeking money from Chinese taxpayers?

This isn't even a bailout for coronavirus -- this is a bailout for the news media's declining ad rates due to the internet and Craigslists.

This is just taking money from real Americans to pay off foreign agents.

More than a dozen senators are calling for any future stimulus package addressing the economic fallout from the novel coronavirus to include funding for local journalism, saying that communities across the U.S. are at risk of losing their source of news because of the pandemic.

"Local news is in a state of crisis that has only been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic," the senators wrote in a letter sent to the upper chamber's leadership on Wednesday.

The letter was signed by 18 Democratic senators, including Amy Klobuchar (Minn.), Sherrod Brown (Ohio) and Joe Manchin (W.Va.), as well as Independent Sen. Angus King (Maine).

The letter notes many of the struggles the news industry has felt over the last two decades as big tech platforms swallow up a majority of the ad revenue that was a key source of profit during the print age. Newsroom employment has significantly decreased and about 1,800 local newspapers have ceased their operations since 2004, according to a University of North Carolina report.

Are you fucking kidding me? This is worse than Nancy Pelosi making sure that she keeps her free seats at the Kennedy Center.

Millions of free citizens have abandoned the media because of their relentless propaganda for the left, for the neoliberal corporatist establishment, and for foreign partners in China.

We've decided to not put our money in their pockets.

So now they propose to get the government to forcibly extract our money from us to give it to them? We're not allowed to refuse to patronize them?

We'll either voluntarily watch their propaganda, or we'll be forced at government gunpoint to make charitable contributions to them?

Fuck these people, and fuck anyone who votes for this.

The same people that demanded that other people just retrain to take lower-paying jobs and stop being such Luddite fuddy-duddies about the wonderful creative destruction unleashed by globalization are now demanding the taxpayers subsidize them to continue lying to us?!

Any media company could instantly become profitable if it stopped playing exclusively to the same 30% of white liberals that every other media outlet plays to -- and they would also fulfill the mandate of serving the general public by doing so.

But they don't want to -- they all want to keep playing to the same 30% of America, their fellow tribalists, and when that results in layoffs and losses, they want the rest of America that they steadfastly refuse to serve to make them whole.

Have we lost any freedom to say who will have our money, and who will have our patronage?

If we do this, we might as well give The Media its very own ten Senators to vote as a bloc for the Media's corporate interests.

If they're going to rule us, let's just make it official.

Is there #NoEscape permitted from the Democrat Media Complex Matrix?

At least Republicans aren't joining in this corporate crony media bailout... yet.

We'll see if they stay firm after the lobbyists start whispering sweet dollars in their ears.

If the Republicans fold on this, I'm officially done with the party and can be classified as hostile enemy forces.

Prediction: The Bulwark and The Dispatch will soon push this idea on behalf of their leftwing investors. National Review will take a more cautious stance (CYA fence-straddling is their cowardly stock in trade), but will also offer a Conservative Case for Bailing Out Our Wonderful Media.

I half expect that the GOP will side with their corporate donors and agree to some kind of bail-out.

Which would be fine by me. I'd rather be opposed to an enemy than be ally to a traitor.
