Saturday Afternoon Chess Thread 08-17-2019
WGM Anna Sharevich (BLR)
Pic Note
You know what's weird? Doing a Google search on 'chess hotties' and getting a bunch of links to previous AoSHQ Chess Threads in the results.
Sorry about this thread's absence last week, but you never know when real-world events are going to disrupt regular programming.
TheJamesMadison's movie thread will be up later this afternoon/evening.
And as always, the chess/dress pr0n thread is an open thread, so there is no such thing as an off-topic comment.

Advanced Problem - Black To Play (1033)
White's position is not as strong as it may appear. What can Black do to push him over the edge?
Note: I think there are actually two solutions (lines), and they are quite different. My app found one I had completely missed.

Solutions Update
Beginner Problem - Black To Play
1K6/4r3/2k5/p2p2bR/8/2P3P1/PP3R1P/8 b - - 0 1
1...Re8+
2.Ka7 Be3+
3.Ka6 Ra8#
Intermediate Problem - Black To Play
r1b3k1/pp2q1p1/7p/2pP4/2Pb4/6N1/P1QB1r1P/2R2R1K b - - 0 1
1...Rxh2+
2.Kxh2 Qh4+
3.Kg2 Bh3+
4.Kf3 Qg4#
Advanced Problem - Black To Play
8/1p2b1pk/2p1p2p/Q1PrPp2/3r1PqP/PP1N2P1/3R1K2/3R4 b - - 0 1
1...Rxd3
2.Rxd3 Bxc5+
3.Kg2 3...Rxd3
Or if 3.Ke1 then 3...Bf2+ 4.Kxf2 Rxa5
4.Rxd3 Qe2+ and there's no stopping mate.
However, my app found a completely different line, starting with
1...Bxh4
And then:
2.gxh4 Re4
3.Rg1 Rxf4+
4.Nxf4 Qxf4+
5.Ke2 Qh2+
6.Kf1 Rxd2
Threatening Qf2#
7.Qxd2
Forced.
7...Qxd2
And now with Black's queen dominating the board, White's unprotected pawns fall like ripe apples.
8.Rg3 Qc1+
9.Ke2 Qc2+
10.Kf1 Qxc5
11.a4 Qxe5
12.Rh3 Kg6
13.Rf3 Qe4
14.Rh3 Qf4+
15.Ke1 Kh5 and wins
Hope to see you all next week!

Note: that cryptic line of letters and numbers you see underneath each board diagram is a representation of the position in what is known as "Forsyth-Edwards Notation", or F.E.N. It's actually readable by humans. Most computer applications nowadays can read FEN, so those of you who may want to study the position, you can copy the line of FEN and paste into your chess app and it should automatically recreate the position on its display board. Or, Windows users can just "triple click" on it and the entire line will be highlighted so you can copy and paste it into your chess app.
