Chess Thread 01-12-2019
"Little girl, I *always* play the Orangutan Opening."
(Yes, the Orangutan is a real opening.)
As always, the chess/dress pr0n thread is an open thread, so there is no such thing as an off-topic comment.
Easier Problem - Black To Play (880)
Goal: Black can get himself a mate in 2
Hint: two knight moves
6k1/8/8/3bQ3/4n3/8/7P/5R1K b - - 0 1
Another Chess Ad:
Here is the problem from the diagram in the ad:
Q5bk/4n3/4B2P/6N1/4Pp2/3p2p1/N7/1K1R2rn w - - 0 1
It's White to play and mate in 3, and, as it turns out, there are two completely different solutions. See if you can find both.
More Challenging Problem - White To Play (278)
Goal: queen a pawn, prevent Black from queening his
Hint: finding the correct first move is key
6rk/p6p/4PP2/8/2p4P/8/P2p4/6RK w - - 0 1

Solutions Update
Easier Problem - Black To Play
6k1/8/8/3bQ3/4n3/8/7P/5R1K b - - 0 1
1...Nf2+
2.Kg1 Nh3#
More Challenging Problem - White To Play
6rk/p6p/4PP2/8/2p4P/8/P2p4/6RK w - - 0 1
Sometimes, to get a good feel for the position, it's helpful to look at what the opposing side will do if it were their turn. In this case, if it were Black's move, the obvious choice would be 1...Rxg1+, followed by 2...d1Q and a won game. So, White needs to prevent this. This rules out any pawn move, such as 1.e7 or 1.f7. That leaves only rook moves, and the only good candidate moves are 1.Rd1 or 1.Rf1.
1.Rd1 is a defensive moves, and, as it turns out, it fails: 1.Rd1 c3 2.f7 c2 3.fxg8=Q+ Kxg8 4.Rg1+ Kf8 5.e7+ Kxe7 6.Kh2 d1=Q 7.Rxd1 cxd1=Q and wins.
Which leaves 1.Rf1! This is the only correct move.
1.Rf1! c3
If 1...Rd8 then 2.e7 d1=Q 3.Rxd1 Rxd1+ 4.Kg2 Re1 5.f7 h6 6.e8=Q+ Rxe8 7.fxe8=Q+ winning
2.f7 c2
3.fxg8=Q+ Kxg8
4.e7 d1=Q
And now, it's mate in 4:
5.e8=Q+ Kg7
6.Qf7+ Kh6
7.Qf6+ Kh5
8.Qg5#

Note: that cryptic line of letters and numbers you see underneath each board diagram is a representation of the position in what is known as "Forsyth-Edwards Notation", or F.E.N. It's actually readable by humans. Most computer applications nowadays can read FEN, so those of you who may want to study the position, you can copy the line of FEN and paste into your chess app and it should automatically recreate the position on its display board. Or, Windows users can just "triple click" on it and the entire line will be highlighted so you can copy and paste it into your chess app.
