Emerald Robinson: "Multiple Sources" Telling Her That the Weekly Standard Will End Operations in a Few Weeks
I had heard the same thing a while back, but I only had one source, and it was hearsay (one guy telling me what an informed source had told him). I did not confirm the single (hearsay) source.
What I heard was that the corporate owners of the Weekly Standard (who also own the cucky, leftish Washington Examiner) had given the Weekly Standard specific metrics for subscribers and internet reach and traffic a year ago (or about that), and the Standard had not met them. And that they would be evaluating whether to go forward with the endeavor at "the end of the year."
Well, it's the end of the year.
CNN's Chief Deplatforming Activist Oliver Darcy praises the Weekly Standard for its leftward slant:
Employees at the magazine are bracing for the worst, multiple people familiar with the matter told CNN.
...
Under Hayes' leadership, The Weekly Standard has remained steadfast in its criticism of Trump. Supporters of Trump have lashed out at The Weekly Standard and its influenced in Republican circles has dwindled.
But while The Weekly Standard's influence in Republican politics has declined, its web traffic has increased, people familiar with the data said.
The magazine has also earned praise for some of the recent work it has done. In November, for instance the magazine published audio of Republican Congressman Steve King telling attendees at a campaign event in Iowa that "there's plenty of dirt" coming from Mexico, apparently referring to Mexicans themselves.
The Washington Examiner just began some kind of "magazine." Maybe they're just getting rid of the people who have gone hard left and getting rid of the trashfire Weekly Standard brand and moving what's left to this "magazine." (I'm putting it in quotes because it might just be an online magazine, which, to me, isn't really a magazine.)
The Weekly Standard is not a brand at this point, but an anti-brand; something that subtracts value from the operation. So maybe this is just a way to get rid of that toxic branding.
And what will the toxic employees do, if they're let go?
Kurt Schlichter has thoughts.
Gloating Tainted:
Assuming this is true, which I do (for now), people are being laid off just in time for Christmas, and most of those negatively affected were trying to make a genuine conservative magazine -- but the troika of Steven Hayes, Jonathan V. Last, and Bill Kristol (and lesser cuck hangers-on like Andrew Egger and Jim Swift) were determined to take the magazine to the left, either to further their new #Woke political agendas or to turn the magazine into a clip-file for their applications to work at the magazines they really want to work at -- The Atlantic most of all.
And if you're going to try to get a job at The Atlantic, you don't want to be Kevin D. Williamsoned; you want to be able to prove you're On the Team and now a loyal footsoldier of the left.
Update: Details for the 2018 Weekly Standard Cruise are still Coming Soon.
