What's The next Step In Trump's Middle East Plan?
Daniel Pipes knows the Middle East quite well, and although he was unrealistically optimistic about the demise of ISIS in Syria and Iraq, his perspective is usually worth a read. And he is Still Skeptical [of Trump's Israel Policy], and I tend to agree. His overall point, that the pallies need to get their asses kicked and internalize that message that there is no violent option available to them, is absolutely on target. And he is suspicious that the Trump administration may provide them with a huge victory without any intermediate step.
There is no legal entity called "East Jerusalem." The Trump administration has been careful not to specify what it recognizes geographically as the Israeli capital of Jerusalem, leaving open the possibility of its recognizing some portion of it for the capital of so-called Palestine.
Jerusalem is the capital of Israel and the physical, intellectual, emotional and military center of Israel and the Jewish people. It is in no meaningful way a Muslim or Arab city, and the conspicuous absence of any mention of Jerusalem in the Koran is a powerful message that it is a political tool rather than a cultural or religious icon.
In a perverse way, the acceptance of "East" Jerusalem as the capital of a palestinian state will cement the contentious and inferior relationship the Arabs have with Israel. Only if they create their own narrative, with a new capital and a new country (as dangerous as that idea is) will they have a chance to become members of the world community rather than the nasty jackals forever lunging and snapping and biting at the civilization around them.
My personal preference is for Jordan to become the center of the palestinian world, because let's face it, that's where most of them belong anyway.
