Chess Thread 07-14-2018
The Repression of DissentVictoria Ivanova
As always, the chess/dress pr0n thread is an open thread, so there is no such thing as an off-topic comment.
Easier Problem - Black To Play (Ch. 1337)
Hint: The h2 square is very weak for White
r1b2rk1/pp3p1p/3p2p1/2pPp3/2PbPPnq/3B3P/PPQ3P1/R1BN1R1K b - - 0 1
More Challenging Problem - Black To Play (718 )
Looking at the position, Black realizes that he needs to do something to protect his pawn on e5. There are a number of candidate moves to do this, among them 1...f6 and 1...d6. These look reasonable. However, both of these moves are not good. Why? What unpleasantries can White inflict on him in each of these two lines?
Hint: one line is an obvious fork, the other is trickier sacrificial line

Easier Problem - Black To Play
r1b2rk1/pp3p1p/3p2p1/2pPp3/2PbPPnq/3B3P/PPQ3P1/R1BN1R1K b - - 0 1
Answer:
1...Qg3!
2.hxg4 Qh4#
or
2.Rf3 Qh2#
More Challenging Problem - Black To Play
rnbqkb1r/pppp1ppp/8/3Pp3/4n3/2P1BN2/PP3PPP/RN1QKB1R b KQkq - 0 1
Line #1 starts with 1...d6.
This is not a good move because of the immediate:
2.Qa4+!
Forking the knight on 34.
2...Bd7
3.Qxe4
And White's position is better.
Line #2 starts with 1...f6
Also not good. White can initiate a combination with
2. Nxe5 fxe5
3. Qh5+ Ke7
If 3...g6? then 4.Qxe5+ forks King, rook, and knight.
4. Qxe5+ Kf7
5. Qxe4
In this position, it is now White who is up now up a pawn, plus he has a big lead in development, plus Black's king is exposed on f7. White is way better, and should win.
Hope to see you all next week!

Note: that cryptic line of letters and numbers you see underneath each board diagram is a representation of the position in what is known as "Forsyth-Edwards Notation", or F.E.N. It's actually readable by humans. Most computer applications nowadays can read FEN, so those of you who may want to study the position, you can copy the line of FEN and paste into your chess app and it should automatically recreate the position on its display board. Or, Windows users can just "triple click" on it and the entire line will be highlighted so you can copy and past it into your chess app.
