The Trump Administration vs. The State Department
Sounds awful, doesn't it? Trump ambassador blocks scrutiny of Israel. But the reality is that the State Department is chock full of careerists who are, and have traditionally been, reflexively opposed to Zionism and the success of the state of Israel. So lumping them in with the savage and backward Arab world is just peachy for them. But the U.S. ambassador would have none of it, and shot down their plan.
“Israel is a democracy whose army does not engage in gross violations of human rights,” Friedman wrote, adding that Israel “has a robust system of investigation and prosecution in the rare circumstance where misconduct occurs.” Besides, he added, “it would be against [U.S.] national interests” to take a step that could limit Israel’s access to military equipment – “especially in a time of war.”
Nothing wishy-washy there!
