249 I'm losing faith in my country because I'm losing faith in its institutions. And that is not my fault but the fault of those entrusted with running and maintaining those institutions. And not to make too much of my own inconsequential observations but I feel compelled to say that this is how civilizations collapse. When the citizenry loses faith, what is left?

I think we're just going through the motions of pretending that we're still a Republic.

The Solution

After the uprising of the 17th of June
The Secretary of the Writers' Union
Had leaflets distributed in the Stalinallee
Stating that the people
Had forfeited the confidence of the government
And could win it back only
By redoubled efforts. Would it not be easier
In that case for the government
To dissolve the people
And elect another?
