The Morning Rant: J.V. Edition

So let me get this straight. California voted to reduce the penalties for certain property and drug crimes, and now they are getting more property and drug crimes. Okay. If they didn't know that this was exactly the outcome they should expect then there is obviously something existentially wrong with the people of California, and judging by the people they elect to Congress, I think there is. Stupidity? That's my first bet, but it could be that the good people of the Golden State want more crime, and so they put more criminals on the street. Or maybe they just want more criminals on the street, and they simply tolerate the unexpected result of more crime?

Thefts rise after California reduces criminal penalties

Larcenies increased about 9 percent by 2016, or about 135 more thefts per 100,000 residents than if tougher penalties had remained, according to results of a study by the nonpartisan Public Policy Institute of California released Tuesday.

Thefts from motor vehicles accounted for about three-quarters of the increase. San Francisco alone recorded more than 30,000 auto burglaries last year, which authorities largely blamed on gangs. Shoplifting may be leveling off, researchers found, but there is no sign of a decline in thefts from vehicles.
