Thread before the Gardening Thread: Real Education [KT]
Serving your mid-day open thread needs
Thanks to Dr No for sending me the bumper sticker above. It's a reminder that the Left has been systematically dismantling real education for some time now.
And those words have personal application, too. Resistance to education is now embedded in the minds of students by their "education" before they even reach college. Sometimes, I feel myself starting to lose my temper when I run into that kind of resistance. Must maintain self-confidence. . . . . . Heh.
Those students whose minds are not yet fully closed face an uphill battle. For example, "Pro-gun event prompts 'content warning' from student activists."
In an email to Campus Reform, the Chico State Republicans chapter explained that it is confused why "anyone would need to put out a warning for an open discussion," but conceded that the GSEC "has their First Amendment right to warn their followers of whatever they want to. . . "we believe events like our 'I'm Pro Gun Change My Mind' will help people participate in a political debate while remaining civil and [open-minded]."
"If people cannot handle a fair and open-minded debate they do not have to participate, and the Chico College Republicans would never force someone to," the group added.
I'm sure you can think of other recent examples of resistance to education.
Incidentally, when I was about 10 years old, my school class was assigned to memorize a Robert Frost poem. Not this one. I still remember it. Not everyone in the class was totally successful in this assignment. Some were embarrassed when they stumbled over the words. We all made it through the experience, though. Wonder if kids would be asked to do anything similar today?
Do you think memorization has value as an educational technique in the age of the internet? If so, how should it be used?
Hope you have a great weekend.
