Thursday Night ONT: ZAZ Edition

What's ZAZ you ask?

ZAZ.jpg

Tomorrow will be a more conventional ONT, and of course the ONT is an open thread, so you can talk about anything you'd like, but tonight the question on the floor is this: What is the greatest Zucker/Abrahams/Zucker movie? Singly or together they've made about two dozen movies, but we're going to concern ourselves with their irreverent, slapstick, joke-every-ten-seconds comedies. Which is a shame because Ruthless People is hilarious, but it doesn't quite meet those criteria.

And the finalists are....

The Kentucky Fried Movie (1977)

Much raunchier than their other works, KFM burst onto the scene in 1977 and created a genre. Centered around a long spoof of Enter The Dragon (Take him to....Detroit!), KFM featured everything from newscasters watching viewers fuck to Cleopatra Schwartz. Catholic High School Girls in Trouble, Rex Kramer, Danger Seeker..the list of skits goes on and on. Make sure to see it in Feel-A-Round.

Airplane! (1980)

What can you say about Airplane! that hasn't already been said? A movie stuffed so full of delicious one liners that it's difficult to go through a day without quoting it. Many people argue that it's the funniest movie of all time, and feel that anyone who disagrees should be committed to the Ronald Reagan Hospital for the Mentally Ill, where they cure people the old fashioned way. In any event, I haven't seen anything like this since the Anita Bryant concert.

Top Secret! (1984)

Just a simple story of a guy who fell in love with a woman that he met at a restaurant who turned out to be the daughter of a kidnapped scientist, only to lose her to her childhood lover who she last saw on a deserted island, who then turned out fifteen years later to be the leader of the French underground. The first time I saw this movie, well, the doctors did all they could, but it took them two hours just to get the smile off my face.

The Naked Gun series (1988-1994)

From the short lived Police Squad! TV series, where the guest star always died in the opening credits, came this epic movie franchise spanning three films. When not umpiring the greatest baseball game ever filmed, Frank Drebin was the star lieutenant of Police Squad, Los Angeles' crack detective unit. These are his stories. Watching these films is like having sex: It's a painstaking and arduous task that seems to go on and on forever, and just when you think things are going your way, nothing happens. Frankly the whole series might not amount to a hill of beans, but this is our hill, and these are our beans.

Not included: Airplane 2: The Sequel (None of the three worked on it, amazingly enough) and Hot Shots! (both) which were Abrahams solo projects. Feel free to quote from them in the thread, however, and remember: The popcorn you're eating has been pissed in.

Film at 11.
