Bradley "Chelz" Manning Hung Up Phone on Harvard Dean Who Told Him He Was No Longer a "Fellow"/
Combo: And GAINZZ Thread
Strange -- I thought he'd been waiting for just that affirmation.
Anyway, still every inch the lady.
Chelsea Manning, the former US soldier who leaked hundreds of thousands of state secrets and served seven years in military prison, abruptly terminated a phone call with the dean of the Harvard Kennedy school in an expression of her dismay at his decision to revoke her visiting fellowship in the face of severe pressure from the CIA.
Manning ended the conversation on Thursday as the dean, Douglas Elmendorf, tried to justify to her his decision to cancel the fellowship only a day after it had been announced.
Oh, and this sweetheart, who taught at the John Jay School of Criminal Justice and bragged that he was happy to be teaching cops who would soon be "dead cops," has been suspended.
"Some of ya'll might think it sucks being an anti-fascist teaching at John Jay College but I think it’s a privilege to teach future dead cops," Isaacson tweeted on Aug. 23.
Below, the GAINZZZ thread. I don't put these up sometimes because I figure 50% or more of the readership just doesn't care, so I'm going to experiment with putting a news post and a GAINZZZ thread in one post. Comment on either (or whatever else) as you will.
The First GAINZZZ Thread About Actual GAINZZZ
I'm doing a slightly modified Stronglifts 5x5, about two months in. This means that I am still Weak AF and cannot answer the question "Bro, do you even lift?" in the affirmative yet.
I hope to be able to say "Yeah bro I do even lift" in maybe two more months.
Still, seeing some GAINZZZ. The big thing of Rippetoe's system or Stronglift's or the Starr strength system both are based on is just adding weight to the load every single time you lift. This sounds innocent enough when you're just lifting an empty bar, but starts to get daunting pretty fast.
Starting out with low weight allows you to train the form, the technique, without having to worry about thinking about it while under a heavy load. The idea is that by the time you're doing heavier work, the technique is mostly hard-wired into your brain/muscle memory.
Rippetoe's program, by the way, is really similar, except he calls for the powerclean instead of a row. I didn't want to do that, because the powerclean seemed scary to me.
However, if you watch this video of Rip teaching the powerclean to a guy from The Art of Manliness blog, it doesn't look that scary at all. (And keep in mind, you're going to start with an empty bar just to ingrain the movement pattern, and then you'll be adding five pounds per lift. So you'll get to do low weight, just practicing the move, before you graduate to a challenging weight.)
One big benefit of Rip's program: he calls for 3 by 5 for most sets instead of 5 by 5. I thought the 5x5 would be better because, you know, it's more, but...
The squats, man.
I'm thinking about going to that 3x5 set up, at least for squats. Doing five sets of five squats, heavy, three times a week (going up by five pounds each time) is daunting and draining, and sometimes I skip lifting a day entirely just because I don't want to do the squats. The other stuff -- fine. But the squats really do suck every drop of cellular energy out of your body.
One good thing about the Stronglifts program is that he has oodles of information, and even an app to track progress and tell you what to lift every day, all for free. The site is very thorough and includes videos for performing each lift, as well as lots of text guidance.
It's a really good beginner's system, with answers to almost all of the questions a beginner would want answered. I hear good things about Rip's system, too, and of course there are lots of videos of Rip coaching various lifts.
So: tell me about YO GAINZZZ, brahs.
