Good morning kids. Honestly, the last thing I expected on a Labor Day Weekend was not only just lots of news, but the threat of a potential nuclear war. The NorKs detonation of what they claim to be a hydrogen bomb is bad enough, but they've allegedly miniaturized it to warhead size. The President and the Secretary of Defense have promised a massive retaliatory strike if either we or are allies are threatened. Crucially, the Chi-Coms have not parsed words and have openly condemned their puppet state for this provocation/escalation of the crisis. Back to our response, I cannot see how this latest incident is not the threat that we have promised to retaliate against. There are those that claim that somehow this is all a ruse, that their technology isn't that sophisticated and that they'd be crazy to attack us. Newsflash: they are. And as to the latter points, in the late 1930s, our view of the Japanese were that they were short, bucktoothed, near-sighted and completely inferior to us in every way. And then came Pearl Harbor and four bloody years of savage warfare. We dismiss North Korea at our peril. PDT has inherited a situation that perhaps should have been dealt with a long time ago. Certainly the policy of rewarding them for their belligerence and believing that they wanted peace was beyond naive; it was willful criminal ignorance on the part of the past three administrations. And lest we forget. the NorK's are sharing and exporting their technology with Iran, a nation that sees Armageddon not as a bug but a feature. There is no more road to kick the can down on. Our alternatives are very few and they will no doubt involve perhaps a significant number of casualties and destruction. But if we do nothing, that number increases by orders of magnitude if they strike first. North Korea's regime must be eliminated and this threat neutralized. As soon as possible.
Our other top stories emerging on the home front are, first, the reports that PDT is in fact going to end DACA. That said, it involves delaying it by six months so Congress can enact some sort of fix that would allow a significant number of illegal aliens protected by that Obama order to stay and gain citizenry. We'll have to wait until the official announcement tomorrow to read the fine print, but from what I can see, it seems the President is trying to appease the base while throwing some sort of bone to the open borders crowd. For me, that dog won't hunt, but I'll wait 24 hours until I pass final judgement.
Next, Hurricane Irma is now expected to slam into the Caribbean tomorrow as a category 4 storm and then make landfall somewhere along the eastern seaboard. Pray for anyone in its path, and that it slams into Tehran and Pyongyang at full strength.
We end on a sad note with news of the untimely passing at age 67 of Walter Becker, musician, songwriter and co-founder of Steely Dan. He leaves behind an incredible legacy of songs that are still as complex and vibrant as they were when they were released, and featured prominently in the soundtrack of my youth. RIP.
Happy Labor Day. That's almost a sarcastic comment. Stay safe and count your blessings.
Anyway, links from around the world, across the nation and up your street. Have a better one and remain blessed.
