Saturday Afternoon Chess/Open Thread (Featuring Dress Pr0n) 07-08-2017

Henry Siddons Mowbray A Chess Game.jpg
A Chess Game - Henry Siddons Mowbray

Good afternoon morons and moronettes, and welcome to the Saturday Afternoon Chess/Open Thread, the only AoSHQ thread with content specifically for all of us chess nerds who pay homage in the temple of Caïssa, goddess of the chessboard. Also, dress pr0n. Each week, I pick out a few lovely, modest, conservative dresses for the 'ettes to admire and appraise. And, for those of you who aren't nerdly enough for chess, you can use this thread to talk about checkers, or other games, or politics, or whatever you wish, only please try to keep it civil. Nobody wants to get in the middle of a hockey brawl on a Saturday afternoon.

Problem 1 - Black To Play (BWTC 219)

The Return of Garry Kasparov

The former world champion who bestrode the chess world like a colossus for 20 years is apparently going to take a break from bashing Trump on Twitter to get back in the game:

Garry Kasparov will be playing in the official St. Louis leg of the Grand Chess Tour from August 14-19, 2017. Please note that this is the Rapid and Blitz competition, just as the ones held in Paris and Levuen these last weeks, and not the classical events. However, this is not an exhibition event, and will determine the official Grand Chess Tour rankings as well as FIDE ratings of the players.

Here's the competition:

2017 St Louis Rapid and Blitz Field.jpg

Looks pretty tough. My prediction: Garry will do less well than expected. Coming back to competitive chess after being out of it for more than a decade is ridiculously hard, plus, has he been keeping up with all the latest discoveries and innovations in opening theory?

Problem 3 - White To Play (514)

Hint: White wins material

Problem 4 - White To Play (BWTC 194)

The decision tree for this one is complicated, but there is one definitive best answer.

Hint: White can force a mate in 4

Endgame of the Week (512)

It's White to move. How does he deal with not one, but two advanced black pawns that are about to queen?

Hint: Actually, White can pull off a mate in 4

Dress Pr0n For The 'Ettes

This is Victorian actress Ellen Terry's Lady Macbeth beetle-wing dress. And by "beetle-wing dress", I mean a dress made out of a thousand beetle wings.

You can read more about this dress and see more pics here. Apparently, Ellen Terry was quite the hottie back in the day.

I forget exactly where I grabbed this next pic from. I think it came from an online clothing store whose target market is Orthodox Jewish women.

Solutions Update

Problem 1 - Black To Play

5r1k/pppq2pp/2n3r1/4p3/4Q3/2P1B2P/PPB4K/R6R b - - 0 1

Nothing fancy:

1...Qd2+
2.Bxd2 Rf2+
3.Qg2 Rfxg2#

Or you can use the other rook, 3...Rgxg2#

Problem 2 - White To Play

20170708 - Problem 2.jpg
2k5/2p1r3/3b1q2/4p1p1/4B3/3N1P1b/Q7/6K1 w - - 0 1

Black is very weak on the white squares. Chase Black's king along the diagonal. He can run, but he can't hide:

1.Qa8+ Kd7
2.Bc6+ Ke6
3.Qa2+ Kf5
4.Be4#

All forced.

Problem 3 - White To Play

20170708 - Problem 3.jpg
r1bqkb1r/pp3ppp/4pn2/2p1N3/2pn4/6P1/PP2PPBP/RNBQ1RK1 w kq - 0 1

There are a number of tactical themes where you capture the queen, which then forces your opponent's king to recapture and thus be out of position.

1.e3 Nc6
2.Bxc6+

The queen can't be captured right away because of 2...Nxd8. So the knight must be taken off, first.

2...bxc6

And now:

3.Qxd8+ Kxd8
4.Nxf7+

Fork!

4...Ke8
5.Nxh8 with material advantage.

Problem 4 - White To Play

The decision tree for this one is complicated, but there is one definitively best answer.

Hint: White can force a mate in 4

20170708 - Problem 4.jpg
rn1q1r1k/p2pNppp/bp1Q4/2p1PN2/2B5/P1R5/5PPP/5RK1 w - - 0 1

There are several paths to checkmate. I have listed a few of them below and trimmed the tree a bit so not all of the possibilities are shown.

Here's a checkmate starting with 1.Bd5:

1.Bd5 Be2
2.Rh3 Qe8
3.Nxg7 Qxe7
4.Qxe7 Rg8
5.Qxf7 Na6
6.Ne8 Rxg2+
7.Bxg2 Bxf1
8.Qxh7#

Here's another:

1.Rh3 Bxc4
2.Qd1 Be2
3.Qxe2 g6
4.Qe3 Qxe7
5.Rxh7+ Kxh7
6.Qh6+ Kg8
7.Nxe7#

1.Ng6+ leads to a whole host of possibilities:

A:
1...hxg6
2.Qxg6 fxg6
3.Rh3+ Qh4
4.Rxh4#

B:
1...fxg6
2.Qxg6 Rxf5 (2...hxg6 3.Rh3+ Qh4 4.Rxh4+)
3.Rh3 Qg8
4.Rxf7+ Qxh7
5.Qe8+ Rf8
6.Qxf8+ Qg8
7.Qxg8#

C:
1... Kg8
2.Rg3

(2.Nh6+ gxh6 3.Rg3 hxg6 4.Qxg6+ Kh8 5.Qxh6#) or (2.Nge7+ Qxe7 3.Nxe7+ Kh8 4.Ng6+ hxg6 5.Qxf8+ Kh7 6.Rh3#)

2...hxg6
3.Qxg6 Qf6
4.exf6 Bxc4
5.Qxg7#

So as you can see, things can get complicated very quickly. But as it turns out, you can force a mate in 4 with

1.Qg6!

Threatening Qxg7#. And Black doesn't have many options here. If 1...Rg8, then 2.Qxh7+ Kxh7 3.Rh3#. Or 1...hxg6 2.Rh3#. Best is:

1...fxg6
2.Nxg6+ hxg6
3.Rh3+ Qh4
4.Rxh4#

So the best that Black can do after 1.Qg6 is to hold off mate for 3 more moves.

Endgame of the Week

20170708- Endgame.jpg
7Q/1k1p4/1P1K3n/1P2P3/8/8/pp6/8 w - - 0 1

Despite his two advanced pawns, Black's king is kind of boxed in. White can exploit this with

1.Qa8+! Kxa8
2.Kc7

Threatening b7+, of course. There isn't much Black can do.

2...b1=Q
3.b7+ Ka7
4.b8=Q#

or 2...d6 3.b7+ Ka7 4.b8=Q#

Hope to see you all next week!

Note: that cryptic line of letters and numbers you see underneath each board diagram is a representation of the position in what is known as "Forsyth-Edwards Notation", or F.E.N. It's actually readable by humans. Most computer applications nowadays can read FEN, so those of you who may want to study the position, you can copy the line of FEN and paste into your chess app and it should automatically recreate the position on its display board. Or, Windows users can just "triple click" on it and the entire line will be highlighted so you can copy and past it into your chess app.

So that about wraps it up for this week. Chess thread tips, suggestions, bribes, rumors, threats, and insults may be sent to my yahoo address: OregonMuse little-a-in-a-circle yahoo dott com.
