The Chess Players
William Orpen, 1902

Good afternoon morons and moronettes, and welcome to the Saturday Afternoon Chess/Open Thread, the only AoSHQ thread with content specifically for all of us chess nerds who pay homage in the temple of Caïssa, goddess of the chessboard. Also, dress pr0n. Each week, I pick out a few lovely, modest, conservative dresses for the 'ettes to admire and appraise. And, for those of you who aren't nerdly enough for chess, you can use this thread to talk about checkers, or other games, or politics, or whatever you wish, only please try to keep it civil. Nobody wants to get in the middle of a tomato fight on a Saturday afternoon.

Hint: White mates in 2

Problem 2 - White To Play (500)

Hint: White wins material

Problem 3 - Black To Play (452)

Black is a piece down. What can he do about it?

Hint: White must lose material - or the game

Problem 4 - White To Play (BWTC 41)

Hint: White mates in 5

Endgame of the Week (Endgame 25)

It's White's move. Can he win? How?

Hint: Black's king is looking boxed in, bigly

And Now For Something Completely Different... Dress Pr0n!

Here is some traditional Norwegian attire:

Finally, here is a screen grab from one of the pop-up ads that have been appearing in my browser ever since I started doing searches for dress pr0n:

Solutions Update

Problem 1 - White To Play

20170617 - Problem 1.jpg
6R1/p4p2/1p2q2p/8/6Pk/8/PP2r1PK/3Q4 w - - 0 1

1.Qe1+ Rf2

If 1...Rxe1 then 2.g3#

2.Qxf2#

Problem 2 - White To Play

20170617 - Problem 2.jpg
5nk1/p2p2bp/1p1qp3/3N4/2P3QP/1P2B1P1/P7/5K2 w - - 0 1

White can win a piece:

1. Nf6+! Kf7

If 1...Kh8, then the moves are as in the main line.

2.Qxg7+ Kxg7
3.Ne8+

White forks the queen and comes out a piece ahead. Should be enough for a win.

Problem 3 - Black To Play

20170617 - Problem 3.jpg
3Q4/5p1k/5Pp1/pB5q/Pr6/6P1/6KP/3R4 b - - 0 1

1... Rb2+
2. Rd2

Not 2.Kf1 because of 2...Qf3+ 3.Ke1 Qf2#.

2...Qd1
3.Rxb2 Qxd8 and now the material is roughly equal.

Problem 4 - White To Play

20170617 - Problem 4.jpg
2r1r2k/1b5p/p2QNq2/3p1P2/3Pp3/8/6RP/6RK w - - 0 1

1. Nf8!

For Black's response, I counted 4 main possibilities:

#1
1...Qxd6
2.Rg8#

#2
1...Rxf8
2.Rg8+ Rxg8
3.Qxf6+ Rg7
4.Qxg7#

#3
1...Qxf8
2.Rg8+ Qxg8
3.Qf6+ Qg7
4.Qxg7#

#4
1...Qg7
2.Rxg7 Rxf8
3.Rg8+ Rxg8

Or 3.Rxh7+ Kxh7 4.Qg6+ Kh8 5.Qg7#

4.Qf6+ Rg7
5.Qxg7#

Endgame of the Week

20170617 - Endgame.jpg
k7/8/PP6/K7/4p3/2Rp4/2r5/8 w - - 0 1

1.Rc8+! Rxc8
2.b7+ Kb8
3.Kb6 Rc6+
4. Kxc6 d2

Instead of d2, my chess app played 4...Ka7. There followed:

5.Kc7 Kxa6
6.b8=Q Ka5
7.Kc6

Threatening Qb5#. I do not want to allow Black to get his pawns going. Fortunately, I can just use the mating threat to work his king down the board and mate him in the corner.

7...Ka4
8.Kc5 Ka3
9.Kc4 Ka2
10.Kc3 d2
11.Qb2#

Now, back to the main line:

4.Kxc6 d2
5.Kb6 d1=Q
6.a7#

Easy peasy.

Hope to see you all next week!

___________

Note: that cryptic line of letters and numbers you see underneath each board diagram is a representation of the position in what is known as "Forsyth-Edwards Notation", or F.E.N. It's actually readable by humans. Most computer applications nowadays can read FEN, so those of you who may want to study the position, you can copy the line of FEN and paste into your chess app and it should automatically recreate the position on its display board. Or, Windows users can just "triple click" on it and the entire line will be highlighted so you can copy and past it into your chess app.

So that about wraps it up for this week. Chess thread tips, suggestions, bribes, rumors, threats, and insults may be sent to my yahoo address: OregonMuse little-a-in-a-circle yahoo dott com.
