Sunrise (Winter Sunrise Sierra Nevada From Lone Pine California)
Ansel Adams
There are several versions of this photograph, and depending on the quality of the reproduction they vary wildly. I would love to see an original!
I spent a lot of time in these mountains, and they are every bit as beautiful as Adams shows. Just West of Adams as he took this photograph is Mt. Whitney, the tallest mountain in the lower 48 states. To the Southeast is Death Valley and the Mojave Desert, and about three hours North is Yosemite....
This photograph saddens me, because it reminds me of a California that no longer exists. Oh, it's still beautiful, but the state that had no boundaries, and was filled with infinite possibility and opportunity is no more.
