What The Hell, Give Kevin Williamson One More Chance [CBD]
Kevin D. Williamson has much to atone for around these parts. His overwrought criticism of small-town America was harsh, cruel, and for the most part hyper-emotional nonsense. And his reflexive hatred of Donald Trump seems to me more of a high school AV Club vice-president's dislike of the captain of the football team. But here he has written a thoughtful and (mostly) calm analysis of the election. Yes, you will be irritated by a lot of it, but there are nuggets that are worth reading. 'I Won' is certainly a not-so-veiled criticism of Trump, but it is also a recognition that he did, in fact, persevere in this nastiest of elections.
Perversely, the Trump presidency is bearing some worthwhile fruit before it even begins: Once more, dissent is the highest form of patriotism, free speech is an absolute right that must be defended at all costs rather than regulated away in the name of reform, presidential power is to be limited, and the anti-war movement on the left, which went silent right around the time the fellow who won the Nobel Peace Prize started assassinating American citizens in extralegal drone strikes, has once again found its voice.
Williamson recognizes the ultimate goal of the conservative movement, which is the reduction in power of the Federal government and its relegation to its traditional role, and that never gets tiresome to read.
