In Wake of StairGate, Anxious Nation Wonders: Is Hillary Clinton Literally Unstable?
It's not just mean-spiritedly attacking an older, frailer woman (though it is that too).
In the campaign of 1992, Bill Clinton and Al Gore made a great show of pushing their campaign bus out of the mud (all of this almost certainly planned in advance), to contrast their (relative) youth and vitality to the frail, aged Bob Dole.
I'm not sure if Donald Trump can capitalize. For one thing, he's slightly older than Clinton. For another, making such an attack requires letting other people make it: Clinton and Gore didn't shout out, "Hey, Bob Dole's old and gimpy." They instead staged a fake bus incident and let their media allies say it.
Trump does have one big media ally willing to take the message out there, though. Drudge:
2016: HILLARY CONQUERS THE STAIRS
2012: FALLS AT HOME, BLOOD CLOT
2011: FALLS BOARDING PLANE
2009: FALLS GOING TO WHITE HOUSE, BROKEN ELBOW
And Trump seems to be getting at the issue, noting that Hillary herself says she "short-circuited" her (dishonest) claim that Comey said she was truthful.
Trump is now worrying about Hillary's "short-circuit in the brain," wondering if "she's all there."
"She took a short-circuit in the brain. She's got problems," Trump said, seizing on Clinton's explanation that she "short-circuited" a recent answer about her truthfulness in discussing her email server.
"Honestly, I don't think she's all there," he added.
The attacks flowed from the Republican nominee as he once again tore into Clinton as "unstable," "unbalanced" and "totally unhinged."
Well, it's no subtle, but it makes the point.
Meanwhile, a lot of people are questioning if some of Hillary's odd public behaviors are actually seizures, and if a handler always near to her when she has a vacant moment has some kind of medical training.
