M.J. Schmid, "The Nightmare" (c. 1800)
According to Wikipedia, Johann Heinrich Füssli painted the original in 1781 (below). He painted at least three other versions of The Nightmare because of its fame. In addition, there are other versions, like the engraving by Thomas Burke (below) and the stipple engraving lithograph by M.J. Schmid shown above. There were also parodies and a satirical version involving a politician.
