James E. Holmes, Demented Demonic Loser Who Murdered 12 People For No Reason, Merely Given Life in Prison
This isn't compassion. This is a repudiation of the basic human instinct to value life, and to therefore take life from those who remorselessly take life themselves.
There was a philosopher, name escapes me, who made this point: The death penalty is not a denigration of our valuation of human life, but rather an assertion of it.
If you can kill 12 people for literally no reason, and society is still unwilling to push you outside the sphere of empathy and therewith outside the sphere of the living: Then how much do we really believe innocent life is worth, in the end?
Here is the likely reason for the misplaced instinct for mercy:
Got news for y'all's: Almost all savage murderers are mentally effed up to some extent or another.
We all feel we can hate Adolf Hitler cleanly, right? Our condemnation of him unmitigated by mercy, right?
Does anyone really think Adolf Hitler wasn't at least partially deranged and psychopathic?
