Food Thread: Super Bowl Beer [Beerslinger]
On a sinking suspicion that beer and food will be the only components to making the Superbowl interesting (I hope I'm wrong and that they have the proper balls to make it a nail bitter) I have decided to grace you with a little beer banter.
Ballast Point (CA) 'Sculpin Grapefruit' IPA , and with a 7.0 ABV...it's doable!
Ballast Point brought us the ever worthy 'Sculpin' IPA, but they have gone out of their way to make it better, brighter, bolder, more complex and smarter. This is a ridiculously good, balanced beer. 'Sculpin' has always been a solid IPA and a good starter for morons new to the IPA game. But the 'Sculpin Grapefruit' IPA is fantastic. A fruity aroma with hints of apricot, lemon peach and mango, it'll take you for a ride when that grapefruit hits your tongue. Brewed with the zest of grapefruit, it carries it's own weight throughout. Oh, and the tap version is way better than the bottle. A limited release, get it while you can, if you can, you'll be the lucky one!
Free Will's (PA) 'Safeword' IPA will set you free. This is a mango habanero IPA and not for the faint of tongue. This is a mullet of a beer, think mango up front (the business), habanero in the back (the party). It's got hops, it's loaded with flavor and holy deflate-gate! It's got heat. Available in the winter months (on the east coast) and a nicely concealed 10.1% ABV. On tap only.
Stone (CA) 'Enjoy By 2/14' is to be "enjoyed by" for a reason and you can taste that in the freshness. It's so fresh you'll fell like someone just slapped your mother. It has a floral nose and those floral hop flavors are up front with a strong yet perfectly balanced malty backbone. You will not know this beer is packing 9.4% alcohol.
Green Flash (CA) 'West Coast IPA' is a hopped up imperial IPA with an ABV of 8.1%. Aroma is is citrus and resiny. The grapefruit citrus taste is in the front and a balanced bitterness hits you on the back side. Although they have altered their recipe in the last year, it is still a solid beer for hop head morons, coming in with 95 IBUs (international bitterness units -- or hops).
Well, I would add some other styles but just don't have enough growlers (that's a lie, I ran out of money). I am hopeful that someone will show up with a pale ale, stout or even a crisp lager. Food would be good too.
