Marvel Announces, Seriously, Eight Movies for "Phase Three"
"Full Slate," indeed. They're announcing all of their movies through 2019.
Yes, five years from now.
One of the more interesting ones is Captain America: Civil War, which will feature a a significant guest appearance by Tony Stark/Iron Man, as well as Black Panther.
Guardians of the Galaxy 2 has been moved up. The sequel is now being released May 2017.
The third Avengers film will actually be released in two parts: Infinity War Part 1 (2018) and Infinity War Part 2 (2019).
Other announced films: The Black Panther will have his own stand-alone film; Doctor Strange (in 2016); a Captain Marvel film (that's a female Superman-like character, not the character now called "Shazam" appearing in DC comics); and an "Inhumans" film. They're another C or D list team of heroes. I know nothing about them.
There's another Thor film, subtitled "Rangnarok," coming too.
It turns out "Ant-Man" is part of Phase 2 (the current slate of movies), and I guess is still scheduled to come out before any of the above.
Marvel did not confirm RD's rumor that Benedict Cumberbatch will be playing Doctor Strange.
This is the most informative recap of Marvel's announcement event I've found.
Burying the Lede? Just realized, no freestanding Iron Man film.
They've got Robert Downey for the Cap movie and the Avengers two-part sequel.
Marvel paid him a lot of money -- a lot; if I understand this right, one of the points he argued for and won was a $50 million retroactive payment for work already rendered on The Avengers -- to secure his presence in the Avengers sequel, but not for Iron Man 4.
