Helping Our Heroes and Their Furry Friends [Y-not]

Via Stars and Stripes, a reminder of the sacrifices our military personnel make for us.

With three dogs of her own to take care of, Amanda Garcia has her hands full. But when a soldier friend needed someone to give a temporary home to her German shepherd, Garcia didn't hesitate to help.

"Taking on a German shepherd, I was like, 'Oh, this is going to be interesting,'" Garcia said.

In the weeks since she assumed temporary care of Kaiser, the 7-year-old German shepherd has become like part of the family for Garcia.

As soon as her friend gets settled at her new assignment in Florida, however, Garcia will turn the dog back over to his owner.

In a military community like Fayetteville, the issue of what to do with the pets of reassigned or deployed soldiers is an ongoing one.

I think I've previously mentioned a group called Dogs on Deployment, that helps match servicemen (and women) with people willing and able to care for their pets when they're away. Seems like a nice organization.

I love that I was born in a country that has so many people who are willing to help others, not just in big ways but in smaller ways like this.

I hate that the Democrats are trying to destroy that charitable spirit and replace it with devotion to The State.

Updated: One more "dog story:"

An aging black Labrador retriever who walked 30 miles back to a Kansas family who didn't want her took a private jet to her new home with a Florida heiress.

Once called Ma Kettle but now known as Lady, the slightly grizzled dog has struggled to find a permanent home since she was taken to the Chautauqua County Animal Shelter after her owner died in 2012.

Kelsey Loyd has twice cared for Lady at the shelter. She told KWCH-TV (http://bit.ly/1nZU08v ) that the first family who adopted her returned her because she was rough with their puppy. Then she escaped from the backyard of the Independence woman who had subsequently adopted her, trudging the 30 miles back to the family's home.

Neither the family nor the woman wanted her back, so she was returned to the shelter.
