Food Thread: Moron's Guide to Memorial Day Beer [Beerslinger & CBD]
Raise a glass of American crafted beer this Memorial Day in honor of those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our great country.
Hops for Heroes and 11 major breweries come together once again to brew 'Homefront IPA'. This year they have a goal of raising $200,000 for Operation Homefront. This national non-profit charity provides emergency assistance to wounded warriors and their families. Some of the breweries, (Stone, Cigar City, Left Hand, Sly Fox & 21st Amendment just to name a few), have already released their Homefront IPA, so look for it to stock for your Memorial Day barbecue.
If you're grilling, you might want to marinate your meats with beer. Apparently beer breaks down those pesky carcinogenic compounds, aka char.
Dreams of the future are fast becoming reality; fast food beer bars. Regarding that beer milkshake, substitute Lefthand's Milk Stout.
And the free beer part of the dream...
What's on your label?
The Brewer's Association is throwing the doors open to craft brewing guidelines. They are the ruling party in this scene that determines the parameters of what can be used to brew a marketed "craft beer". Seems very convenient for Sam Adams.
Anheuser-Busch attempts to bully Stone out of moving to SC.
Home brewers and chemists alike appreciate really good head, which cometh from barley proteins.
Yet another reason to drink.
Hop prices going up, up, up. Start your hop garden NOW, save later.
On May 1st The Alchemist brewed it's 1000th batch of Heady Topper Double IPA. Buyer beware! The Alchemist has busted people selling this beer through the online black market.
In case you cared, the beer tossed was a NOLA Hopitoulas.
PSA(reports indicate this was a Budweiser moment).
Beer-Dome anyone?
'Dead Rise Old Bay Summer Ale' by Flying Dog - Frederick, MD
Teaming up with Old Bay, for their 75th anniversary, and named after the deadrise fishing and crabbing boats used to navigate the waterways of the Chesapeake Bay, this beer is released, (albeit limited), just in time to mark the beginning of summer. Reports are that it's not as spicy as beer geeks had hoped. But, with Ralph Steadman's artwork on the bottle, you'll look good showing up with this brew in hand to your Memorial Day shindig.
Matt's Burning Rosids, Stone Brewing - Escondido, CA
An imperial saison (spring seasonal) that's brewed with cherrywood-smoked malts in honor of a young brewer, Matt Courtright, who left this world much too early in a forklift accident at Stone's warehouse. This is one of my favorite saisons. Drink it with whatever you're eating.
'Chillwave Double IPA' by Great Lakes Brewing Company - Cleveland, OH
An American style imperial IPA with citrus and floral notes. Brewed with Nugget and Mosaic hops that give 'er a full body that's bitter in the middle and ends with a crisp, clean finish. This beer's here to win over all you IPA lovers. Pairs well with a smoked beef brisket.
Ok. Over to the dark side...
'Santa Cruz Brown Ale', Epic Brewing - Salt Lake City, UT
This epic hybrid has sweetness up front from it's dark, chocolate malts. It's got a creamy finish. But it's those robust American hops throughout that gives this beer it's thunder. Comes in 22oz. bombers at 7.1%.
'Ramstein Maibock', High Point Brewing Co. - Butler, NJ
This dark, rich, malty helles bock style lager will have you reaching for another before May's over. The nose has caramel and toffee notes. Coming in at 7.5%, you'll need your growler, it's available only on tap.
'Stone Smoked Porter with Chipotle Peppers',Stone Brewing - Escondido, CA
If you're looking for a Porter this weekend, go for this one. Problem solved.
'Mokah', Southern Tier Brewing - Lakewood, NY
An imperial chocolate stout that goes in sweet and milky and ends with a coffee bitterness that will leave your palate wanting to take another swill. The alcohol does not linger so you will not know she's a 10 percenter.
What're y'all tapping up this weekend?
