David Cameron Channels His Inner Barack Obama After Election Night Drubbing
Obama has spent the last 5+ years acting as if someone else is President. He's always the last to know about things and he's really mad at those people in Washington who keep messing things up.
After his party was beat up pretty badly by the UKIP in EU and local council elections, David Cameron, who has Prime Minister has a lot more direct power over government legislation than a US President does, announced that he too is very upset by those people in London, whoever they are.
David Cameron has said he shares the “frustration” of voters who have shaken the mainstream political parties by backing the UK Independence Party.
The Prime Minister said that people have backed Ukip because they are unhappy at the Coalition’s performance on issues like welfare and immigration – and suggested that their criticisms are justified.
“We've got to work harder and we've got to really deliver on issues that are frustrating people and frustrating me like welfare reform, immigration and making sure that people really benefit from this recovery,” he said.
Mr Cameron was speaking as results from the local elections showed that Ukip gains have cost the Conservatives and Labour dearly in many parts of the country.
It looks as if the UKIP could win about 27% of the EU Parliament vote in the UK, good for 22 seats.
How much of this will translate to UK national elections, which are set for next year, for the UKIP is unclear. The party is often hit as being far right, racist and full of nutty candidates. Sounds familiar, right? Odds are some of it is true while a good bit of it is exaggerated.
What is pretty clear however that much like in the US, while there are difference between the two main parties they also share much of the same underlying assumptions about the role of government and boundaries of political discourse. Voters are looking for ways to demonstrate that they would like some greater distinction and less of the old boys club, business as usual.
The UKIP isn't going to win a majority or anything like it in Westminster but unlike the US where 3rd parties are a waste of time, they might be able to replace the LibDems in a coalition with Conservatives and have a real voice in the direction of the country.
