250 Marines on Standby in Sicily for Emergency Evacuation of Libya Should the Country Descend Into Chaos and Slaughter
Sure, sure, of course.
I suppose there is a benefit to Obama's cheap & easy "light footprint" invasion, aka the time-limited scope-defined kinetic action.
The benefit is that you don't have many resources in-country.
The downside, though, is that you also have no way to influence the goings on in the country.
My annoyance is that Obama -- and his partisan Democratic Media -- have for years portrayed Obama's approach as a cost-free, strictly-superior model to Bush's.
Bush's model had some downside to it, obviously -- a great many dead American heroes, and a trillion dollars in spending.
Obama's model-- this quick invasion-on-the-cheap -- also has some downsides. Not that the press ever bothered itself to ask about that.
"Unbelievably small," John Kerry promised, regarding Obama's proposed sky-invasion of Syria.
If Libya does descend into chaos and slaughter, and Americans are safely evacuated out, that will be bad, but it won't directly threaten America.
But if what arises from that chaos and slaughter is yet another Al Qaeda bastion... well that does threaten America, and Obama's actions will have given rise to that.
Incidentally, 250 Marines on alert in Sicily seems an "unbelievably small" force to evacuate many hundreds of US embassy and intelligence personnel, but I guess this "light footprint" model served us so well in Benghazi we're sticking with what works.
