2014: The Year of Hometown and Life (gaming thread)

Can I just get this out of the way but I wish someone would set Youtube ablaze with them being overzealous in pulling of videos due to copyright issues and what they deemed as too sexy. This isn't the first time where they've forced me to re-write a post because one of the main things I want to point to has been removed. That being said, there is some length to this week's thread

More below the fold

CES 2014 News

Well, you don't expect much with gaming and CES and it lived up to expectations.

In non-surprising news, the new prototype of the Rift won Best of the Best Award.

Valve still has no clue what their Steam Machines are supposed to be other than being a badge on mini-ITX cases that comes with a premium. There are no standards on anything (not even on their controller). They're baby's first PC for people who can't put LEGOS together.

Of all the high priced stuff that I wouldn't trust Razer with building, a modular PC is pretty high on that list. Kudos for "borrowing" a case design I saw a few years ago (no, I can't remember the name of it. It cost a grand and looked like a bigger Level 10 case).

Microsoft announced that they sold 3 million XBox One units last year.

Sony announced that they moved 4.2 million PS4 units.

Sony also announced that they're going to try to emulate Hulu. As a shareholder, I ask why?

Sony's videogame streaming service is apparently launching this summer. Will be interesting in seeing if there is actually money in this after everyone else has failed to do so.

Nvidia announced the Tegra K1 APU which they plan on trying to stick into everything. Considering Tegra 4's roaring success, this should be interesting in how hard this face plants.

The Glorious Senran Kagura series

As a great man once said "Tits are life, ass is hometown"....I honestly have no clue where I'm going with this but he did announce that there are three new Senran Kagura games coming out. A straight sequel to the 3DS game (which came out in the US last month), a new game for the Vita under the genre tag of "Hyper Big Breasts Cooking Rhythm Game" and a another game where he didn't give much info on (would be shocked if it wasn't for the PS3). I'd post the full announcement but I've never had luck with NicoNico cooperating with me:(

Here is some horribly compressed footage of the 3DS game

And here is the animated trailer for Dekamori Senran Kagura

NEWS

• CD Projekt released a trailer for the videogame version of the boardgame (Fighting Fantasy is making it) based around their The Witcher videogame series. I hope there is a Bang Triss Merigold phase to it.

Sure, why not. Mad Catz is releasing a Tournament Edition of their ugly but quite comfortable R.A.T. mouse

As much as I love the Quake games, I sadly always forget that QuakeLive is still a thing. No more website gaming as they've moved to a stand alone launcher.

Nvidia has started selling the G-Sync DIY kits for the ASUS VG248QE monitor. Run you $200 per kit with a $9.50 shipping charge.

I think this has been a better money maker than /pizza in WoW for Pizza Hut though I'm not 100% sure. Who knew gamers can be lazy?

On one hand, Quantic Dream hasn't increased the audience for their games with Beyond only selling a million copies. On the other, they didn't lose any audience after Heavy Rain. Both of these are good things depending on who you ask.

Undead Labs (State of Decay) and Microsoft have re-upped their exclusivity contract. Bring on the Code 4 MMO

• New trailer for that upcoming Rambo game. It looks so bad but yet I can't stop being fascinated by that hair tech

Nintendo announced that they moved 11.5 million 3DS units and 16 million games here in the States last year. They say it was a powerhouse last year but those numbers aren't exactly great.

Kingdom Under Fire 2 is still alive. I've given up on this actually coming out. Just wish it wasn't a MMO. Would kill for an actual Kingdom Under Fire, though they had some jank, both games on the XBox were killer. Hell, I would even take another N3 game.

• Still surprised that Capcom is going to let the Megaman boardgame come out but eh, this game looks boring. That being said, you still have a week to throw cash at them on kickstarter

• Well, Sega and Creative Assembly finally publicly acknowledged their Alien game. It looks good but as much as I like Creative Assembly, they really don't have a stellar track record outside of the Total War games

• The new Game Informer finally spilled the details for Turtle Rock's (Counter Strike and Left 4 Dead) upcoming Evolve which was one of the few games that actually sold for some cash during the THQ bankruptcy auction. It looks good
Part 1
Part 2

David Queener nailed why the new Shadow Warrior didn't work.

Leave it to Elder Scroll fans to not let go of Morrowind as they try to bring it to Gamebryo Part Deux

• Speaking of Elder Scrolls, the MMORPG is in the midst of a beta weekend and current reports is that it's still really bad :/

In news to make no one sad, 2K Sports have dropped the MLB 2K series. Sure, it means that Sony has a monopoly on the consoles now but outside of the Jikkyou Powerful Pro Yakyuu (came over here as Power Pros) sand the Pro Yakyuu Spirits series from Konami, baseball videogames have been crap ever since you had to start placing your bat swing during batting.

NEW RELEASES

Assassin's Creed Liberation HD (PS3,360 & PC) - Well, it bombed on the Vita which kinda sucked as it's the only thing attached to AC3 that was worth playing. Aveline was a cool character and it has some decent writing. Of course with AC4 that just came out a few months ago, do you want another AC game? At the very least, it's worth throwing onto your watchlist.

Europa Universalis IV: Conquest of Paradise (PC) - Well, it's the first expansion for EUIV. You know what your getting into when your looking at a grand strategy game. Run ya $15.

Nidhogg (PC) - It's a two player fencing game that has won quite a few awards the past few years. It looks okay I guess, main selling point to me is Daedelus did the music for it.

The Banner Saga (PC) - This was a Kickstarter project by some people who used to work at Bioware. It's a Viking based SRPG. They already released a F2P multiplayer part of the game last year and frankly, it wasn't good but this is the single player component of it so hopefully it's a lot better.

that's it, I'm done
