Gaming Thread 12/29/2013

It was Christmas so you're not getting much news

New trailer for Capcom's upcoming Deep Down

Sony released a list of games that will have it's online services cut off in May. The big names are Gran Turismo 5, the Resistance series, SOCOM series and MAG.

Vic Ireland and Monkeypaw Games are bringing over the PS3 version of Class of Heroes 2.

New trailer for the upcoming To Love-Ru Darkness game, To Love-Ru Darkness Battle Ectasy for the Vita

Respawn showed off the Atlas class of titan in TitanFall

Popcap continues to show that they have some of the best community managers around

As much as I don't think I want a multiplayer game set in the Legacy of Kain universe, this trailer doesn't look that bad

*********************************************

The top three are in order but the rest are a free for all:

Fire Emblem: Awakening (3DS) - After the misstep of Shadow Dragon, this was a tour de force in a great cast, killer soundtrack (best soundtrack in the past few years) and enjoyable gameplay even if the casual mode that was included honestly bugged me for some reason. If you haven't played this yet and like SRPGs, go out and buy it damn it and import the OST while you're at it. Tharja so sexy

Dragon's Crown (PS3 and Vita) - I really really like Vanillaware's games and though it may not be my favorite game from them (Odin Sphere was better) the game is a true love letter to beat'em ups of old, especially Capcom's D&D games (George Kamitani, president of Vanillaware worked on them). Other than it drags a bit at the end where it feels like they created too much art that they didn't want to cut, it's really hard to find any faults with the game. The outrage du jour from people complaining about the art before it was released is quite hilarious in retrospect.

Pathogen (iOS) - Frankly, it's just a version of GO with chain reactions but what lies in the simplicity is what makes this great as the game can really make you into a headcase in trying to outwit your opponent. If there is a big falling with the game, it's that the game hasn't built a community around it. Though the AI is quite good, it pales in comparison to playing actual humans. And I honestly have no clue in how they could get the game out there to other people which is quite sad.

Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds (3DS) - It's been awhile since we've gotten a good Zelda game and though it took some fanservice, Nintendo finally did it. Though you could ding it a bit for some uninspired dungeons, the game is solid as a whole. First Zelda game I've liked in 10 years.

Assassin's Creed 4 (PC, 360, PS3, Wii U, PS4 and Xbox One) - Never really been a big fan of the Assassin's Creed series and probably the reason why I like this one. Barely any Desmond crap was appreciated. And like the vibe that Watch_Dogs gives out, it feels like a separate game that about mid way through the dev cycle the decided to change it into an Creed game. Maybe it's the setting, maybe it didn't feel stuffy like the Enzio and Connor games did but I really dug this one.

Tomb Raider (PC, PS3, Wii U and 360) - Yeah, they rebooted the series again and took a few things from the Uncharted franchise (cue the Inception horn) but they blended everything together in a nice package. As much as I would have liked some bigger tombs instead of the single rooms scattered around, I can't say that I missed them. Though the rainbow collation of side characters were mostly bad and the villain was lack luster, every character that matters in the series was well thought out and I was a-okay with Camila Luddington's moans as Lara.

Lords of Waterdeep (iOS) - Nothing fancy just a straight up good port of the boardgame. Surprisingly, I find the videogame version easier to play and the AI is pretty good.

Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch (PS3) - Though it gets wobbly at the end, I have a hard time seeing how the DS and PS3 versions bombed in Japan as the game was quite good. The story was good with an interesting ending and Studio Ghibli holding Level 5's hand in the art design gave it a good art style that you don't see in gaming that much. Too bad Namco had to completely bobble the release of the collector's edition.

Fallen Enchantress: Legendary Heroes (PC) - It's maybe just an expansion to Fallen Enchantress but it's the definitive way to play the game. The tweaks they gave to the heroes and letting them level up really gave meaning to the game and adds some nice intricacies to this brand of the 4X genre. The 180 that this franchise has done in a few years is quite remarkable considering the the god awful Elemental roots. This is the game that should have been released a few years ago. Wardell signing Derek Paxton to make a good game has paid dividends.

Dead Rising 3 (Xbox One) - Yeah, it can chug when there are a ton of zombies on screen and your going crazy but it doesn't get into the way of the carnage. Full out, this game is a ton of fun and the way they go with upgrading upgraded weapons paths adds even more ways to wrack up the combo meter. It's fun until you break the game as soon as you build the Ultimate Grim Reaper though. I do wish they would finally make a story that doesn't completely suck but it is what it is.
